power amplifier. This would prevent the disturbance from putting any
significant amount of energy into the pendulum, because while the
force would be the same, the distance through which it acts would be
far smaller.

The first thought that came to mind when I read these posts was “how does this differ from free fall?” A rock falling would exhibit no control system qualities. A rock tumbling down a cliff would exhibit no control system qualities. A rock tumbling down a hillside and coming to a stop as it crashed against the highway would exhibit no qualities characteristic of a control system as it came to a stop: so how could a pendulum be assumed to exhibit control system qualities when the same conditions are at work? Pushing against a pendulum to hold it off equilibrium creates no different a condition than a rock being held in place on a hillside by a few small pebbles. .

This brings me to my main question.

So I did think of fish, and I said "AHA" how did I overlook the obvious? Then I said "wait a minute, that might be true if they remained motionless but what about when swimming about, what about Einstein's equivalence principal? In an accelerated frame an observer cannot tell the difference between acceleration and gravity. Fish certainly accelerate and decelerate in motion through the water. The fins pushing against the water from zero to max force would be much the same as my jumping up in the air, which is a form of increase in g as my feet pushed against the ground. So effectively speaking a fish experiences against its fins and against its body as resistance from the water as it swims, what I do as I walk: an increase in force identical to g except for the direction of motion. The fish would experience it in all directions, a little like a space ship firing rockets in various directions. It also swims upward and downward, and I am thinking that it would be easier descending than ascending. So if I'm right then this would not be the best dividing line. Maybe plankton is closer.

Gonna try to find some more examples.

But I still have this nagging doubt about gravity, since it seems to bring all the parts of living things to a relative standstill when they die, that countering it, at least in part, is an inherent part of the evolutionary history of every living thing. Maybe 'using' it is a better word. Or better yet, "What is the relationship between gravity and a particular LCS?"

It might help if you could explain why it is important that gravity be an essential part of a control system's operation. I can think of lots of control systems that are not concerned with gravity, for example the body'stemperature control systems, or biochemical control systems for regulating the pH of the blood, or the orienting control systems that work just as well in orbit or free space as on the ground. Of course if a control system operates to change position or angle, there are inertial forces that result from linear or angular accelerations (as you point out), so a gravity-like force is involved -- but that's just a property of the world the control system lives in, and I can't see any special connection with the principles of control. Gravity isn't needed for control systems to work.

My view of scientific hypotheses is that the person who comes up with them is main person responsible for testing them, and a very important part of testing them is trying to find ways to prove they are wrong. It seems to me that you're trying to prove that your idea about gravity is right and leaving the counterexamples and tests to others, which isn't my notion of how the game is played. Can you explain just what your strategy is here? If you do want to prove that gravity is essential for control, why do you want to prove that?

Yes.

No. All living systems (that we know of, apart from astronauts)
live in a gravitational field, but to counter the effects of that
field is the job of only a few of the organism’s control systems.
Imagine the actions of voting which serve (ineffectively) to control
your perception of the political state of your country. It’s a
decision you make with due “gravity”, but “gravity”
is involved only in the metaphorical sense (other than in the
low-level control systems involved in walking to the voting booth,
etc.).

difference?

What makes the difference is that YOU think of control systems
that involve countering the force of gravity, rather than of the vast
majority of control systems, which don’t. Consider the action of
smiling at your boss, an action involved with the control of a
perception of the boss’s attitude toward you, which (presumably) has a
reference value that he feels goodwill toward you.

Only a few biological control systems counter the force of
gravity, and those are pretty low-level ones. Granted, high-level
control systems act by providing reference values to low-level
systems, and those provide reference values to lower-level systems.
Eventually those reference values percolate their way to (usually)
muscle control systems which do act in a gravitational field, but
that’s totally irrelevant to the higher system, for which those
lower-level systems are simply parts of its environmental feedback
loop.

The higher-level system is NOT acting in a gravitational field.
It may be acting in a field of social influence, but that’s an
entirely different matter which requires a quite different kind of
discussion.

OK. This is a lengthy post, so I hope it helps. I will make a few comments on your points as they're made and finish up with a more thorough and integrated commentary.

What is important to me is that I say something meaningful and intelligent, maybe even important. I take a backseat to everyone else in this CSG group. My technical background and educational level do not compare with others on this net. I am way out of my element when it comes to talking about neurons, dendrites, synapses, etc. so part of my motivation is to compensate by bringing into play in perhaps an amateurish way some things which I have given considerable thought to. More about this later.

I made it a point to say 'living control systems' because I thought that they were recognized to be different. I'm not sure if you overlooked that or if your comments reveal a PCT perspective that says there is no difference. I need you to clarify that. I cannot say that your comments are inaccurate because they are accurate if we think of concern as a conscious condition because blood has no consciousness with which it may exercise concern. Maybe in the PCT view all control systems concern themselves with something. If that is how you use the word concern in PCT then I have to be told that. Working from that end and up into the complete human being it may mean that you believe the conscious actions of humans is no different a control system principal than the pH of blood. If that is true that I have to consider whether or not you are force fitting principles in order to maintain the purity of PCT, it's "it must be true at all times and places" nature. So back to my original question why did you use the word concern and did you notice that I said living control systems, and not control systems?

These systems do not live independently of each other or the human body, nor do they exist nor could they exist independently of the environment in which they live. I appreciate the autonomous theme of PCT but failure to recognize the dependence of all of these systems on the environment, failure to recognize the impact of evolutionary history on the dependent nature of our bodies is not necessary in order to experience a measure of autonomy.

When Cybernetics was introduced in recognition of the similarities between control systems that were being developed by humans and humans themselves the terminology that was developed to fit with machinery may not be completely adequate in dealing with living control systems. The "evolution" of inanimate control systems does not compare exactly with the evolution of living control systems. For now I am going to do my best to make all your terminology fit but I'm still going to raise questions when I have difficulty.

I'm getting the impression that PCT views various control systems as isolated systems. So when you say the body's temperature or the blood pH as not being concerned with gravity I have to agree, if I isolate the system. I need gravity to work with. My blood needs me to work with gravity in order to exist. What I do not see is the body's temperature or blood pH as existing outside of the body. They are part of a body which has as its evolutionary history the influence of many forces one of which is gravity. Blood flow in the body is influenced by gravity. The body's temperature is a product of both internal and external, current and evolutionary influences. I do not find it necessary to separate these systems from one another. I in fact am compelled to see them as part of an integrated whole. The conceptual maintenance of them as separate systems is an imagined condition. They do not exist independently. They would not exist without their evolutionary history.

The control systems that work in free space are not living control systems. I know of no orienting control system in free space that was not put there by living control systems on planet Earth who understood how to control for sensory inputs of overcoming gravitational forces.

The control systems which work just as well in free space as on the ground have been designed by living control systems which have as part of their evolutionary history, gravity, and all the while accepting and modifying an environment by working with gravity. They were launched into space with an understanding of gravitational forces. They were launched from the planet Earth by overcoming gravitational forces. This was accomplished by living control systems which have been able to formulate relationships between mass and energy because gravity has played a role in the design of the organism.

All of that notwithstanding let's take a look at a nonliving, orienting control system in free space. You said orienting so I believe you meant with respect to its environment. Otherwise both of the reference signal and a disturbance would have to be self generated.and produce a lot of conflict. So let's imagine that there can be the sudden appearance of an orienting nonliving control system in space. If it is in space with nothing else there can be no orienting. No orienting, no control, no control system. So there must be something else for it to orient itself with so to keep it simple let's imagine there to be a planet or a star. Let us say that it is the only other item in the universe. In order to orient itself with respect to the star or planet it would have to know that it's there. It would have to be close enough to be perceived. Over time gravitational forces would bring the two together, unless I don't understand enough about gravity under these conditions. Perhaps they could be far enough apart that gravitational force would be irrelevant for ever in which case it could be ignored. What then would the orienting control system orient. They could only orient distance or perhaps a certain portion of its surface to face the star or planet but if it were doing that and nothing else on the scene there would never be a disturbance consequently no control, consequently no control system. If there were disturbances that might move the orienting system requiring control for position. It would have to overcome its own inertia in some way and this can be viewed from an Einsteinian point of view to be equivalent to experiencings gravity.

We could imagine that the only other thing in space would be another orienting control system. I suppose we could make them so far apart that gravitational forces could be ignored but I'm not sure for how long because they would have to have some sense of each other they would have to be in close enough proximity to sense each other's presence in which case there were probably be a gravitational influence over time that would require some correction. If not they would eventually make contact there would be nothing left for them to control. No control, no control system. If we had them control for distance to each other they couldn't do that unless a gravitational force created error. If we had them control something else as simple as lining up a laser beam between them eventually they would crash and cease to be. They would no longer be control systems. Also we would require that they control some parameter or they would not be control systems in which case one of the things they must control for is distance otherwise they will eventually collide. If it is possible for them to be in free fall around each other gravity is still at work and influencing whatever other condition they are controlling. If we place them in space along with numerous other bodies and had them control for a straight path they would be controlling against gravitational influences. If we had them control for no change in relative position they would have to control for gravitational influences. This is not the same as saying they need gravity for control but it is saying that they must deal with it. If on the other hand they were living control systems who had evolved under the influence of gravitational forces they would now need gravitational forces in order to control.

Living control systems require those things which they evolved requiring. Take a fish out of water it will die. Hold a cow underwater it will die. Take blood out of the human and both cease to exist as control systems.

Do principles of control exist without environments? If control systems do not control they do not exist. If they control they control sensory inputs. By your own definitions you have established a need for an environment. In the case of living control systems evolution history has dictated many of the reference signals. Part of the environment of land-based living control systems is a condition or parameter or thing or perception called gravity. We need it. We need it or a substitute for control..

Again I point out that I said living control systems. And for the sake of continuing this discussion I would like to say that gravity is needed for land-based living control systems. Although I didn't even originally say needed, what I did say was that their behavior involved acting against the forces of gravity. I really don't think that was an adequate statement now because I would now clarify it more by saying that some of the actions of living control systems must be against the forces of gravity. In B:CP you point out that control is indicated by a human standing erect that is of course against the force of gravity. If we take a human out of the context of gravity eventually that human will cease to exist, and cease to control, cease to be a control system. This is not an immediate effect but an eventual one. So let me restate again maybe more intelligently, certainly more knowledgeably, that a living control system which has evolved in the context of gravity needs gravity or a substitute in order to exist.

It may be that gravity is not needed for every control system to work, but it is certainly needed for some living control systems to work. The carpenter, the farmer, even the astronaut to name a few. Perhaps we could imagine a spaceship and ourselves in a perpetual state of freefall, but, even that would require gravity. But if we were to just travel through space inside a container forever, with all of our needs supplied, we would have to generate oxygen, food and water, find a way to deal with waste matter, overcome boredom, we would have to provide containers and all kind of systems to compensate for the fact that gravity is no longer at work for us. Or we could keep our feet planted squarely on the earth and let it continue to do the things that it always has and gain a great measure of freedom by working with it.

You have mentioned in your books how freedom to store the effects of labor and to move on to other activities is one of the advantages of living control systems, you have called it amplification. If you look at the effect of gravity on land-based living control systems I believe you'll see that it affords much of the amplification you speak of. Imagine a world with no gravity. It doesn't exist except in imagination.

You've all been kind and I trust you will continue to do so with my amateurish attempts to talk about these things.

You're right!

I plead guilty. This is an area in which I need to develop skills and discipline. I am committed to doing so. If I understand you correctly I have this prove that living land-based control systems can live without gravity. I would have to say that that would require living without the substitutes that would be required to replace what gravity does for us in which case it sounds like it might involve some destructive testing and I might get my ass into some really hot water. And it might take me more time than I have, perhaps more time than the accumulated lifespans of all humans to ever exist to find that one human who can live without gravity. That's a tall order. Unless of course I believe in the resurrection of spirits. But that's going a little too far out of the scientific realm. If I understand you correctly that is what is required. If I'm wrong please explain how.

Gravity of course was a result of Newton's parsing and naming of the human experience, a percepting, an experiencing naming. That percept, that unit of experience, can be viewed as isolated but that is an imagined condition for the sake of facilitating greater utilization. If we hold on to the imagination of isolation as real, does this not compare to what Rick Marken calls in one of his books the neurotic controlling of an imagination. If the imagined isolation of systems becomes controlled, is this not neurotic in the same sense?

A lot lot goes into this including my personal history. But before I get into that I think my original statement should be modified. It will probably not meet scientific standards so just consider it a rough draft. It is bound be modified as I learn more about PCT. My goal is to relate gravity and to talk about gravity in the context of PCT. So based on what my understanding of PCT is it looks to me like all living control systems, as whole systems, which are land-based, need gravity for their existence. If they need it for their existence they need it for control because they need control for existence. A control system who never controls never exists as a control system. Living control systems who evolved under the influence of gravity need gravity for control.

  A modification of the statement or going beyond the land-based systems might be something that deals with inertia. That is, living control systems require the ability to overcome the inertial resistance to motion of their own masses in order to accomplish error reducing behavior. If this statement is true it may be true only down to a certain level. There may be living microcontrol systems which I don't know about which can live in substrate which have no source of mobility relative to the substrate. My expertise and understanding of microbiology is not adequate here. Throughout my discussion of gravity I am talking about integrated assemblies of whole systems, not conceptually imaginatively isolated subsystems. But even if I say that, I anticipate a problem with my own words because I don't really believe I am as isolated as I can conceive myself to be. Because on reflection I did not will myself into being, I had no say in my biological construction or history and I cannot alter the fact that I will die. I can only live as well as I can, controlling those perceptions that I can, accepting those I can't. One thing I cannot do in reality is eliminate the effect that gravity has on my life.

Now a little personal history. I was indoctrinated at an early age into the notions of heaven and hell. Some part of me believed for a very long time that there was in fact a God that would actually torment people for ever with the pains of fire. This coupled with my real experience of having been burned resulted in a very strong determination to never die. Part of this commitment resulted in my making gravity an enemy to conquer. A lot of time and energy were wasted doing this. Einstein's theory of relativity and the speculation by many of its adherants to the notion of time reversal became for me what Rick Martin would call a neuroses, a controlled imagination. When I now read about time reversal in scientific journals as being seriously considered by grown men, intelligent human beings, I am reminded of how confusing the world can be. How people can believe anything. complete and total nonsense. Most of all I am alarmed by the fact that the people who believe these things are sometimes considered the most intelligent. My son who is 29 years old with a degree in environmental technology still thinks it might someday be possible. When I try to explain to him that we will probably will never traveled beyond our solar system he had difficulty understanding why. He grew up on Star Trek and it still has a hold on him.

The theory of relativity itself says that gravity is an illusion created by the curvature of space-time. To me this shows the subconscious drive to deny gravity, and to move into an isolated frame where it doesn't exist. They are true statements as long as you stay within the limiting system, but it has to ignore much of what goes on in order to be true. To compensate for this, the inertial frame was created, putting gravity back into the picture in the form of acceleration. This allowed for a very heady world were the only thing that mattered were calculations. This heady world of calculations has given us the big bang in which all the matter in the universe is compacted into some minute area. In what? Space doesn't exist yet. These are purely imagined conditions, made possible by the almost unlimited capacity of the brain, held onto as well founded fact by grown men and women, who are willing to close their minds to problems that their own narrow terminology creates. Let ther be electron, let there be photon. The imagined photon and the imagined electron never filled the bill entirely so we had to let there be quantum theory. The new God is the God of nature whose laws are irrefutable. Nature, the new third-party authority, the invented, created, unchallageable, uninditeable third person authority. In reality the theories are anthropomorphically sourced. Their origins are the capacities of embodied minds and strategic unities. I digress.

While I was caught up in the belief that i could avoid death some better part of my psyche would not allow me to overlook reality. Little by little I was able to let go of that system. Part of the work I did in overcoming that was establishing the perception of gravity as a friend. I focused on what it did for me, the role it played in the evolution of the body that I have, the role it plays every day in keeping things in place, the role it plays in allowing me to move things about, the role it plays in keeping the rivers in their course, the role it plays in allowing me to predict well enough to continue to exist. From a PTC perspective it is I who give it meaning.

It could of course play a role as much in my demise as it played its part in a tsunami or a landslide. But in my daily living, my interaction with my world, my controlling of sensory inputs the experiencing named gravity is present, is playing an essential role, even if I have not named it. Of course, if Newton hadn't named and parsed his experience in the way that he did, I would not have been dealing with the concept of gravity and it would not have effected my life the way it did. But he did and it did and I did and:

now I have to figure out a safe way to prove that a land based living control system doesn't need gravity for control. Whew!

First let me say that I intended to be speaking of living control systems -- or the control systems which together make up living systems -- when I spoke of control systems operating without gravity. When I spoke of control systems in orbit or free space, I was referring to organisms and animals that have flown, survived, and functioned normally in space (except for those aspects of these organisms that have the main function of resisting gravitational forces, such as bones).

Naturally an organism that evolved on the surface of a planet has many functions that are intimately related to the effects of gravity, and moving to a gravity-free environment would be a profound disturbance of these effects. However, human beings and other organisms are capable of reorganizing, apparently to an extent not suspected before space flight, and if they were moving permanently into space, not intending to return to Earth, who knows what they might turn into? After several generations in space, human beings might not look very human. But I would bet that they would still be functioning assemblies of control systems, and at the higher levels, very much the same as before.

I don't think we have any basic arguments here. However, you have shown me that there are really two major and possibly independent aspects of the subject of gravity in control as it comes up in your life. One is simply technical, and I am sure you are able to grasp the basic technical facts about how control systems work. But the other is very personal.

I commend you and thank you for your trust in talking about your life history, where clearly the subject of gravity is not just technical. Gravity, as I understand what you've said, is symbolic to you of a wrenching change in your world view. Gravity is like the ground you stand on, a constant reminder of the solid reality of your own experience as opposed to what others claimed you should be experiencing -- supernatural, mystical, awful presences hovering just beyond the range of vision and governing you in a way beyond your control or understanding. Nobody has to convince you that gravity exists, whereas it would take constant pressure and emotional coercion to convince you that Heaven and Hell await you, that God reads your thoughts, that you exist only to obey the will of some other entity. My impression is that you realized you were being caught in a trap and would disappear into it if you allowed it to happen. Your lifeline, according to this impression, was an experience that nobody had to tell you about, that you could see for yourself simply by interacting directly with reality as it appeared to you. I hope I am not grossly distorting what you have said.

So if I am reading you right, the concept of gravity is essential to the operation of your own control systems at your highest levels, because it gave you a bridge from one reality into another one where you felt more in control of your own life. Is that anywhere near the mark? Am I understanding what is in the background of your thinking here? I'm sure you can describe it better than I can, since I'm out here and you're in there.

It might help if you could explain why it is important that gravity be an essential part of a control system's operation.

OK. This is a lengthy post, so I hope it helps. I will make a few comments on your points as they're made and finish up with a more thorough and integrated commentary.

What is important to me is that I say something meaningful and intelligent, maybe even important. I take a backseat to everyone else in this CSG group. My technical background and educational level do not compare with others on this net. I am way out of my element when it comes to talking about neurons, dendrites, synapses, etc. so part of my motivation is to compensate by bringing into play in perhaps an amateurish way some things which I have given considerable thought to. More about this later.

I can think of

I made it a point to say 'living control systems' because I thought that they were recognized to be different. I'm not sure if you overlooked that or if your comments reveal a PCT perspective that says there is no difference. I need you to clarify that. I cannot say that your comments are inaccurate because they are accurate if we think of concern as a conscious condition because blood has no consciousness with which it may exercise concern. Maybe in the PCT view all control systems concern themselves with something. If that is how you use the word concern in PCT then I have to be told that. Working from that end and up into the complete human being it may mean that you believe the conscious actions of humans is no different a control system principal than the pH of blood. If that is true that I have to consider whether or not you are force fitting principles in order to maintain the purity of PCT, it's "it must be true at all times and places" nature. So back to my original question why did you use the word concern and did you notice that I said living control systems, and not control systems?

These systems do not live independently of each other or the human body, nor do they exist nor could they exist independently of the environment in which they live. I appreciate the autonomous theme of PCT but failure to recognize the dependence of all of these systems on the environment, failure to recognize the impact of evolutionary history on the dependent nature of our bodies is not necessary in order to experience a measure of autonomy.

When Cybernetics was introduced in recognition of the similarities between control systems that were being developed by humans and humans themselves the terminology that was developed to fit with machinery may not be completely adequate in dealing with living control systems. The "evolution" of inanimate control systems does not compare exactly with the evolution of living control systems. For now I am going to do my best to make all your terminology fit but I'm still going to raise questions when I have difficulty.

I'm getting the impression that PCT views various control systems as isolated systems. So when you say the body's temperature or the blood pH as not being concerned with gravity I have to agree, if I isolate the system. I need gravity to work with. My blood needs me to work with gravity in order to exist. What I do not see is the body's temperature or blood pH as existing outside of the body. They are part of a body which has as its evolutionary history the influence of many forces one of which is gravity. Blood flow in the body is influenced by gravity. The body's temperature is a product of both internal and external, current and evolutionary influences. I do not find it necessary to separate these systems from one another. I in fact am compelled to see them as part of an integrated whole. The conceptual maintenance of them as separate systems is an imagined condition. They do not exist independently. They would not exist without their evolutionary history.

The control systems that work in free space are not living control systems. I know of no orienting control system in free space that was not put there by living control systems on planet Earth who understood how to control for sensory inputs of overcoming gravitational forces.

The control systems which work just as well in free space as on the ground have been designed by living control systems which have as part of their evolutionary history, gravity, and all the while accepting and modifying an environment by working with gravity. They were launched into space with an understanding of gravitational forces. They were launched from the planet Earth by overcoming gravitational forces. This was accomplished by living control systems which have been able to formulate relationships between mass and energy because gravity has played a role in the design of the organism.

All of that notwithstanding let's take a look at a nonliving, orienting control system in free space. You said orienting so I believe you meant with respect to its environment. Otherwise both of the reference signal and a disturbance would have to be self generated.and produce a lot of conflict. So let's imagine that there can be the sudden appearance of an orienting nonliving control system in space. If it is in space with nothing else there can be no orienting. No orienting, no control, no control system. So there must be something else for it to orient itself with so to keep it simple let's imagine there to be a planet or a star. Let us say that it is the only other item in the universe. In order to orient itself with respect to the star or planet it would have to know that it's there. It would have to be close enough to be perceived. Over time gravitational forces would bring the two together, unless I don't understand enough about gravity under these conditions. Perhaps they could be far enough apart that gravitational force would be irrelevant for ever in which case it could be ignored. What then would the orienting control system orient. They could only orient distance or perhaps a certain portion of its surface to face the star or planet but if it were doing that and nothing else on the scene there would never be a disturbance consequently no control, consequently no control system. If there were disturbances that might move the orienting system requiring control for position. It would have to overcome its own inertia in some way and this can be viewed from an Einsteinian point of view to be equivalent to experiencings gravity.

We could imagine that the only other thing in space would be another orienting control system. I suppose we could make them so far apart that gravitational forces could be ignored but I'm not sure for how long because they would have to have some sense of each other they would have to be in close enough proximity to sense each other's presence in which case there were probably be a gravitational influence over time that would require some correction. If not they would eventually make contact there would be nothing left for them to control. No control, no control system. If we had them control for distance to each other they couldn't do that unless a gravitational force created error. If we had them control something else as simple as lining up a laser beam between them eventually they would crash and cease to be. They would no longer be control systems. Also we would require that they control some parameter or they would not be control systems in which case one of the things they must control for is distance otherwise they will eventually collide. If it is possible for them to be in free fall around each other gravity is still at work and influencing whatever other condition they are controlling. If we place them in space along with numerous other bodies and had them control for a straight path they would be controlling against gravitational influences. If we had them control for no change in relative position they would have to control for gravitational influences. This is not the same as saying they need gravity for control but it is saying that they must deal with it. If on the other hand they were living control systems who had evolved under the influence of gravitational forces they would now need gravitational forces in order to control.

Of course if a control system operates to change position or

angle, there are inertial forces that result from linear or angular accelerations (as you point out), so a gravity-like force is involved --
but that's just a property of the world the control system lives

Living control systems require those things which they evolved requiring. Take a fish out of water it will die. Hold a cow underwater it will die. Take blood out of the human and both cease to exist as control systems.

Do principles of control exist without environments? If control systems do not control they do not exist. If they control they control sensory inputs. By your own definitions you have established a need for an environment. In the case of living control systems evolution history has dictated many of the reference signals. Part of the environment of land-based living control systems is a condition or parameter or thing or perception called gravity. We need it. We need it or a substitute for control..

in, and I can't see any special connection with the principles of control. Gravity isn't needed for control systems to work.

Again I point out that I said living control systems. And for the sake of continuing this discussion I would like to say that gravity is needed for land-based living control systems. Although I didn't even originally say needed, what I did say was that their behavior involved acting against the forces of gravity. I really don't think that was an adequate statement now because I would now clarify it more by saying that some of the actions of living control systems must be against the forces of gravity. In B:CP you point out that control is indicated by a human standing erect that is of course against the force of gravity. If we take a human out of the context of gravity eventually that human will cease to exist, and cease to control, cease to be a control system. This is not an immediate effect but an eventual one. So let me restate again maybe more intelligently, certainly more knowledgeably, that a living control system which has evolved in the context of gravity needs gravity or a substitute in order to exist.

It may be that gravity is not needed for every control system to work, but it is certainly needed for some living control systems to work. The carpenter, the farmer, even the astronaut to name a few. Perhaps we could imagine a spaceship and ourselves in a perpetual state of freefall, but, even that would require gravity. But if we were to just travel through space inside a container forever, with all of our needs supplied, we would have to generate oxygen, food and water, find a way to deal with waste matter, overcome boredom, we would have to provide containers and all kind of systems to compensate for the fact that gravity is no longer at work for us. Or we could keep our feet planted squarely on the earth and let it continue to do the things that it always has and gain a great measure of freedom by working with it.

You have mentioned in your books how freedom to store the effects of labor and to move on to other activities is one of the advantages of living control systems, you have called it amplification. If you look at the effect of gravity on land-based living control systems I believe you'll see that it affords much of the amplification you speak of. Imagine a world with no gravity. It doesn't exist except in imagination.

You've all been kind and I trust you will continue to do so with my amateurish attempts to talk about these things.

My view of scientific hypotheses is that the person who comes up with them is main person responsible for testing them, and a very important part of testing them is trying to find ways to prove they are wrong. It seems to me that you're trying to prove that your idea about gravity is right and leaving the counterexamples and tests to others, which isn't my notion of how the game is played.

You're right!

I plead guilty. This is an area in which I need to develop skills and discipline. I am committed to doing so. If I understand you correctly I have this prove that living land-based control systems can live without gravity. I would have to say that that would require living without the substitutes that would be required to replace what gravity does for us in which case it sounds like it might involve some destructive testing and I might get my ass into some really hot water. And it might take me more time than I have, perhaps more time than the accumulated lifespans of all humans to ever exist to find that one human who can live without gravity. That's a tall order. Unless of course I believe in the resurrection of spirits. But that's going a little too far out of the scientific realm. If I understand you correctly that is what is required. If I'm wrong please explain how.

Gravity of course was a result of Newton's parsing and naming of the human experience, a percepting, an experiencing naming. That percept, that unit of experience, can be viewed as isolated but that is an imagined condition for the sake of facilitating greater utilization. If we hold on to the imagination of isolation as real, does this not compare to what Rick Marken calls in one of his books the neurotic controlling of an imagination. If the imagined isolation of systems becomes controlled, is this not neurotic in the same sense?

Can you

explain just what your strategy is here? If you do want to prove that gravity is essential for control, why do you want to prove that?

A lot lot goes into this including my personal history. But before I get into that I think my original statement should be modified. It will probably not meet scientific standards so just consider it a rough draft. It is bound be modified as I learn more about PCT. My goal is to relate gravity and to talk about gravity in the context of PCT. So based on what my understanding of PCT is it looks to me like all living control systems, as whole systems, which are land-based, need gravity for their existence. If they need it for their existence they need it for control because they need control for existence. A control system who never controls never exists as a control system. Living control systems who evolved under the influence of gravity need gravity for control.

A modification of the statement or going beyond the land-based systems might be something that deals with inertia. That is, living control systems require the ability to overcome the inertial resistance to motion of their own masses in order to accomplish error reducing behavior. If this statement is true it may be true only down to a certain level. There may be living microcontrol systems which I don't know about which can live in substrate which have no source of mobility relative to the substrate. My expertise and understanding of microbiology is not adequate here. Throughout my discussion of gravity I am talking about integrated assemblies of whole systems, not conceptually imaginatively isolated subsystems. But even if I say that, I anticipate a problem with my own words because I don't really believe I am as isolated as I can conceive myself to be. Because on reflection I did not will myself into being, I had no say in my biological construction or history and I cannot alter the fact that I will die. I can only live as well as I can, controlling those perceptions that I can, accepting those I can't. One thing I cannot do in reality is eliminate the effect that gravity has on my life.

Now a little personal history. I was indoctrinated at an early age into the notions of heaven and hell. Some part of me believed for a very long time that there was in fact a God that would actually torment people for ever with the pains of fire. This coupled with my real experience of having been burned resulted in a very strong determination to never die. Part of this commitment resulted in my making gravity an enemy to conquer. A lot of time and energy were wasted doing this. Einstein's theory of relativity and the speculation by many of its adherants to the notion of time reversal became for me what Rick Martin would call a neuroses, a controlled imagination. When I now read about time reversal in scientific journals as being seriously considered by grown men, intelligent human beings, I am reminded of how confusing the world can be. How people can believe anything. complete and total nonsense. Most of all I am alarmed by the fact that the people who believe these things are sometimes considered the most intelligent. My son who is 29 years old with a degree in environmental technology still thinks it might someday be possible. When I try to explain to him that we will probably will never traveled beyond our solar system he had difficulty understanding why. He grew up on Star Trek and it still has a hold on him.

The theory of relativity itself says that gravity is an illusion created by the curvature of space-time. To me this shows the subconscious drive to deny gravity, and to move into an isolated frame where it doesn't exist. They are true statements as long as you stay within the limiting system, but it has to ignore much of what goes on in order to be true. To compensate for this, the inertial frame was created, putting gravity back into the picture in the form of acceleration. This allowed for a very heady world were the only thing that mattered were calculations. This heady world of calculations has given us the big bang in which all the matter in the universe is compacted into some minute area. In what? Space doesn't exist yet. These are purely imagined conditions, made possible by the almost unlimited capacity of the brain, held onto as well founded fact by grown men and women, who are willing to close their minds to problems that their own narrow terminology creates. Let ther be electron, let there be photon. The imagined photon and the imagined electron never filled the bill entirely so we had to let there be quantum theory. The new God is the God of nature whose laws are irrefutable. Nature, the new third-party authority, the invented, created, unchallageable, uninditeable third person authority. In reality the theories are anthropomorphically sourced. Their origins are the capacities of embodied minds and strategic unities. I digress.

While I was caught up in the belief that i could avoid death some better part of my psyche would not allow me to overlook reality. Little by little I was able to let go of that system. Part of the work I did in overcoming that was establishing the perception of gravity as a friend. I focused on what it did for me, the role it played in the evolution of the body that I have, the role it plays every day in keeping things in place, the role it plays in allowing me to move things about, the role it plays in keeping the rivers in their course, the role it plays in allowing me to predict well enough to continue to exist. From a PTC perspective it is I who give it meaning.

It could of course play a role as much in my demise as it played its part in a tsunami or a landslide. But in my daily living, my interaction with my world, my controlling of sensory inputs the experiencing named gravity is present, is playing an essential role, even if I have not named it. Of course, if Newton hadn't named and parsed his experience in the way that he did, I would not have been dealing with the concept of gravity and it would not have effected my life the way it did. But he did and it did and I did and:

now I have to figure out a safe way to prove that a land based living control system doesn't need gravity for control. Whew!

to work. But people living today have two feet. Those limbs I think are
specialized to keep people upright. When you go to the fridge for a beer (it is
a warm summer day today) you walk on your feet. If gravity didn’t exist, I don’t
think you would have had feet. I think you still would have had fins and nobody
would have generated beer. Or maybe you would have had four arms to avoid collisions
with the roof.

Gravity isn’t needed for control systems to work, but
because gravity exists we control perceptions we would not be able to control
if gravity didn’t exist.

I think
Martin would not hear the secretary asking him his name. No gravity, no sound. (the
air molecules would have left the earth long ago).

I think
gravity is one of the reasons for all perceptions I control.

that our learned systems are formed because of our genes and our genes are a
result of our evolutionary history.

Our learned hierarchy is a not planned result of

If you accept that there exist simple scalar
control

systems (the ones that are the very foundation of

PCT, which control the value of a single numerical

variable), then it is obvious that there exist control

systems that don’t include gravity as a component

of the controlled perception.

Your last sentence (then it is obvious that …) is not
obvious to me. I think different, but of course I may be wrong. All systems
(not the imagined systems) have an output signal going to muscles and glands.
These output signals order our muscle and glands to do what is necessary change
our perceptual signals toward our references. Every time a muscle contracts,
the effect is a movement of limbs, tendons or tissue and the gravity force is a
component.

If we perceive what we wish to perceive, the error is
zero and we don’t need to control for that perception. If we perceive something
we don’t wish to perceive there is an error and we behave to perceive what we
wish to perceive. If you say “I don’t agree. Listen to me. ….”, you move your
moth and your jaw muscles defeat gravity.

Of course the effect of gravity is small. It is so
small that we disregard it. It is so small that Bill disregarded gravity in his
arm model (I think).

The alternative is that ALL living control systems

control ONLY for gravitational effects, and that

clearly isn’t the case. A trivial counter-example

is controlling for being neither too hot nor too cold.

I would not say “ONLY for”, I would say “ …control for
gravitational effects among other effects”.

I will not be stubborn, but I think we control for
neither being too hot nor too cold partly is done by the fluid balance in our
body. And our fluid balance is affected by gravity. Astronauts often swell in
their head when they orbit out there and they often swell in their bones when
they arrive at earth.

I think that the point Jim may have missed is that

what is controlled is independent of the actions

that may be effective in influencing the value of

the controlled perception. When you control for

the temperature perception, the action is simply

to invoke (change references for) other controlled

perceptions: you might take off a sweater, move

to a cooler room, walk to and change a thermostat,

etc. All of those actions are EXTERNAL to the

temperature control system. They form part of its

enviromnetal feedback loop. Those actions, in turn,

influence control of perceptions such as "perceiving

oneself to be not wearing a sweater", which in

their turn evoke (set reference values for) other

perceptions external to the evoking perceptual

control systems. Eventually, in that cascade of

reference settings, it is almost inevitable that

references are set for control systems whose

actions are indeed working with or against

gravity. But gravity is an element only of the

perceptions those peripheral control systems control.

I understand what you say that controlling some
perceptions lead to the control of other peripheral control systems where the
actions often work against gravity. The control of the central perception is
independent of gravity.

I say that the control of all perceptions leads to
muscle contractions and/or glandular secretion. Muscle contraction works with
or against gravity. Glandular secretion leads often to displacement in the
fluid balance which often is dependent on gravity.

Do we say the same?

The size of the effect is the key idea. Gravity "is involved" in just about everything we do, but in a large number of cases its involvement is so small, or so nonspecific, that any disturbances it causes are probably overwhelmed by other kinds of disturbances. After all, our actions are influenced by the gravitational attractions of the stars -- ask any astrologer -- but the gravitational effect is far too small to detect.

As to the arm model, yes, it includes gravity, which you can switch on and off. If the arm is extended straight out with gravity off, switching gravity on makes it sag a degree or two. Just how much depends on the loop gain of the control systems. The simulated force holding the arm up increases, of course, when gravity is on by almost exactly the weight of the arm. Nothing about the control system's organization has to change to produce the opposing force -- it happens automatically.

Astronauts adapt almost instantly to loss of gravity when the orbital insertion engines turn off. S-R theorists predicted that it would take days to be able to "respond appropriately". Once in orbit, however, the astronauts' bodies immediately begin reorganizing (or continue doing so) and start adapting to the lower need for muscle forces. Muscles begin to atrophy and bones to lose mass, unless a rather rigorous schedule of exercise is maintained. Without the exercise, astronauts returning to Earth did require days to be able to stand and walk normally, because their muscles had to rebuild the lost tissue. Their control systems functioned properly but the limits on how much force they could produce were lowered considerably, and the loop gain was probably (nobody measured it) lower.

So apparently we are continually reorganizing ourselves at many levels to deal with ongoing disturbances like gravity. I wonder how many astronauts back on Earth after a long stay in orbit break their coffee cups by setting them down on air.

First let me say that I intended to be speaking of living control systems -- or the control systems which together make up living systems -- when I spoke of control systems operating without gravity. When I spoke of control systems in orbit or free space, I was referring to organisms and animals that have flown, survived, and functioned normally in space (except for those aspects of these organisms that have the main function of resisting gravitational forces, such as bones).

Naturally an organism that evolved on the surface of a planet has many functions that are intimately related to the effects of gravity, and moving to a gravity-free environment would be a profound disturbance of these effects. However, human beings and other organisms are capable of reorganizing, apparently to an extent not suspected before space flight, and if they were moving permanently into space, not intending to return to Earth, who knows what they might turn into? After several generations in space, human beings might not look very human. But I would bet that they would still be functioning assemblies of control systems, and at the higher levels, very much the same as before.

There are two things which seem to be creating some of the difficulty. The first is as Martin Taylor points out in his post of May the sixth at 9:52 is my lack of thinking of all control systems in the same way. It is difficult for me to equate subsystems of living control systems to living control systems themselves and equally difficult for me to equate electromechanical control systems to organic control systems. I see the ease with which others on this net go from living control subsystems to LC whole systems and from electromechanical systems to living systems as though they were all the same. This is difficult for me to do. I will talk more about this when I comment on Martin Taylor's post

The second difficulty, and in this may be the result of my nonengineering mind trying to map the engineers mind. It looks like the engineers mind is very much focused on the very now while I have been thinking of things over a longer time span.

I don't think we have any basic arguments here. However, you have shown me that there are really two major and possibly independent aspects of the subject of gravity in control as it comes up in your life. One is simply technical, and I am sure you are able to grasp the basic technical facts about how control systems work. But the other is very personal.

I commend you and thank you for your trust in talking about your life history, where clearly the subject of gravity is not just technical. Gravity, as I understand what you've said, is symbolic to you of a wrenching change in your world view.

The change has been in its emotionaly symbolic meaning.

Gravity is like the ground you

stand on, a constant reminder of the solid reality of your own experience as opposed to what others claimed you should be experiencing --

It is the meaning that it has for me which I changed. In the past it meant a pull toward death and the grave. Now it means life because without it I would not exist or exists as I do. Nor would my life be the same without it. Gravity has become a comforting thought not an enemy. Of coarse, the sudden descent of a lost airplane engine upon my head could change things in an instant. So gravity does not enjoy in my world an exclusive positive position. But when I begin to think of it as a cause of death I can balance that with a concept of it as a major partner in the cause of my existence: And I feel better.

coercion to convince you that Heaven and Hell await you, that God reads your thoughts, that you exist only to obey the will of some other entity.

In the beginning, as a child, it took no pressure. All it took was the unchallenged echoing by other living control systems of things they had heard and accepted. I did the same thing. I heard it and accepted it. Today it would take a lot of pressure. I am thankful that I live in a country where I can at least not experience official government suppression of my thoughts; that doesn't guarantee that I won't experience the wrath of a "friend of God".

My impression is that you realized you were being

caught in a trap and would disappear into it if you allowed it to happen. Your lifeline, according to this impression, was an experience that nobody had to tell you about, that you could see for yourself simply by interacting directly with reality as it appeared to you. I hope I am not grossly distorting what you have said.

So if I am reading you right, the concept of gravity is essential to the operation of your own control systems at your highest levels,

YES.

Not just a 'concept of' gravity but it's 'emotional meaning'. Which I consider a higher level. In one context I had made it only something that had to be overcome, an enemy. I began to realize that if I destroyed gravity I would no longer exist. If I overcame it completely, that is destroyed it, I would be destroying myself. If on the other hand I concentrated on a productive life I could make it work for me. In a way this is overcoming but it has very specific and distinct Differences. This is why I raised the question "do all living control systems act against and/or in concert with gravity. In that sentence I was referring to complete or whole living control systems not subsystems. I realize now that it might have been better to say land-based although I am not completely convinced of that.

For my purposes in participating in csgnet I would like to distinguish between electromechanical control systems, living control systems and living control subsystems.

If is necessary to view them all as equals that I will have to stay with CS or LCS but I wonder if it would not help to do something like this:

CS for electromechanical control systems

LCS for living control systems

LCSs for living control subsystems.

It is quite easy to build a modular electromechanical control system in which you can change and or remove subsystems but I view that as very unlikely with living control systems. On the other hand I admit that I do not know is much about biochemistry or molecular biology as others on this net so I am willing to learn.

It is intelligible that the control systems functioned
properly. It is not intelligible in the same way when you say that the limits
on how much force they could produce were lowered. It is neither intelligible
that the loop gain is lowered. But that is my appreciation. And I may be wrong
because I am not sure enough about the gain.

Let m start with an example. I sit on a chair here on
earth and lift a 5 kg counter weight with my biceps. Doing that a p signal is directed
to the comparator where it meets the reference signal r, representing my wish
to lift the counterweight.

p = (ki*kekor
+ kd*d)/(1 + ke*ko)

It is OK when you say that ki= 1, kd=
1 and ke*ko = 100. Then p = (100/101)*r + d/101).

The same can be written after one year with orbits
around the earth, but this time d is much less than it is on the earth and p
will be less.

After this reasoning I would not say that “the limits

produce were lowered considerably”, but they perceive a much less force lifting
the counter weight.

Of course muscles may begin to atrophy and bones may
begin to lose mass. But can’t we also explain walking problems after return to
earth with reorganization.

For a year up there, I three times a day wished to
lift the 5 kg counterweight I was able to lift down there. The first times the
e (error) remained greater than zero, because of the less p signal up there.

A repeating error leads to reorganization and to a
reference signal adjusted to the constant p when counter weight was lifted.

Within a year or less I lift the counter weight and
the error becomes zero. No more reorganizing.

Coming back to earth ready for the counter weight, the
r is too little relative to the p. (Gravity makes the p greater). I don’t make
it and the error becomes greater than zero. Reorganizing again and after some
days (weeks) there is harmony between the r and the p.

I am quite sure they have rules for setting things and
one of the rules is not setting anything on air.

I think cognitive psychologist will assume “no
gravity” and think that the coffee cups will fall on the floor down here and PCT-ers
will assume the visual feedback and seize the cups before they crash against
the floor. People will behave as the PCT-ers assume.

Can we say that a distinction between a cognitive
psychologist and a PCT-er is that cognitive psychologists think people just
behave in accordance with their memory. They skip disturbances in the
environment equivalent Skinner who denied that thoughts and feelings existed.
Can we say that cognitive psychologists assert the Black Environment in the
same way Behaviorists asserted the Black Box?

Your control systems are functioning normally, but there are limits on how much force they can produce. If I gave you a 500 Kg weight you could not lift it. Yet you would not say your control systems are not working normally.

If a muscle atrophies, it can still be used to counteract disturbances just as well as before, but the maximum amount of disturbance the control system using it can resist becomes less. That is what happens to astronauts in orbit. They do not become less skillful. They just beco0me less able to exert large forces -- unless they exercise and prevent the loss of muscle tissue.

The control equations you cite are correct, but they do not say anything about the maximum amount of output that can be produced. If you set a reference signal of ten billion units, you will calculate that a certain amount of output and a certain amount of perceptual signal will result. But of course the equations are mistaken in that case.
