Quote from the May _Scientific American_ on the match between
Kasperov and Deep Blue:

"In three minutes, the time allocated for each move in a formal
match, the machine can evaluate a total of about 20 billion moves;
that is enough to consider every single possible move and countermove
12 sequences ahead and selected lines of attack as much as 30 moves
beyonds that. The fact that this is still not enough to beat a mere
human being is "amazing," Campbell says. The lesson, Hoane adds, is
that masters such as Kasperov "are doing some mysterious computation
we can't figure out."

Possibly the same kind of "computations" that allow Kasperov to
remain upright in his seat during the match?
