Rick,
Just finished reading your China paper. I think it is terrific. It makes me sad (I. e. I experience an emotion that I reference as "sad") however, to think that one more area in which U. S. leadership in science is, in all probablility, being outsourced to a nation that is rapidly closing on U. S. dominance on the world stage. Well, as Jesus said, "Let those that have ears to hear, listen; let those that have eyes to see, look." Hope you have a great time there and don't get sick.
It is sad to think of the loss of anything especially leadership or jobs. We could think of it as leadership in outsourcing. The more outsourcing I can do personally the more power I have. How would you feel if we suddenly eliminated all outsourcing and your cost-of-living one up 300, 600, 1000%. This is what would happen without outsourcing.
It is the consumer who dictates sourcing. He is more prone to pay less for more than to pay more for less. So to eliminate outsourcing you would have to dictate all consumer activity, including yours.
If we isolated ourselves it would amount to doing to ourselves during peacetime what we do to our enemies in time of war.
I hope seeing and hearing the above can help you feel less sad. Of coarse we can always feel sad about losing an opportunity to feel sad.
