That put you two up on me; I get neither an inkling nor a dim inkling. It's like hearing aliens from Alpha Centauri talking at first contact, and realizing that while they seem to have learned English, the higher-order thoughts that guide the language are nothing like ours.

Thanks for that reference. I'm aware of Baez's blog but don't follow it.
That put you two up on me; I get neither an inkling nor a dim
inkling. It's like hearing aliens from Alpha Centauri talking at
first contact, and realizing that while they seem to have learned
English, the higher-order thoughts that guide the language are
nothing like ours.
I get a little more from it, but I still feel that I'm gazing up at the clouds around lofty Parnassus.
Despite his mentions of control theory, he hasn't actually got round yet to discussing control systems. I'll try and clamber up some of the foothills before he does.

There is a book I’ve heard recommended that I think would be applicable to the math indicated by Baez. It is:
Conceptual Mathematics: A First Introduction by F. William Lawvere, Stephen Hoel Schanuel

It won't take you very far up the mountain ...
It's well regarded as an introduction for people who don't know much/any math, although I so far haven't been able to get very far into it, having a better time with various books that are supposed to be harder (Goldblatt, Lambek and Scott).
My interests recently have been in proof theory and some of the easier parts of 'categorical
logic' (results, such as they are, in a paper called 'yet another attempt to explain glue' on my webpage), while the circuit stuff drags in all sorts of other things that I don't know anything
about (yet, at least).
Baez and his mates hang out at a site called 'the n-category cafe', which I think of as 'the ultimate smart kid's clubhouse', and understand somewhere between 2 and 5% of what goes on there ...
