This morning I was talking with Joe Sierzenga, Morrice
Elementary School principal in Michigan. I have mentioned
him before as a student of mine who took a course from me
this past summer and who has since developed his knowledge
of PCT by reading the original works of WTP and applying
the ideas within his school. Today, he discovered a
controlled variable in a very interesting way.
Every morning Joe takes his dog for a walk in his
backyard and it is a continual tugging match, each having
an idea of the direction they want to go. Joe said he was
always puzzled by the dog's insistence on it's desired and
somewhat erratic direction. Joe was puzzled by what the
dog wanted. This morning, there was snow on the ground.
Then Joe discovered the dog's controlled variable. The
dog tugged as usual, but this time Joe saw the reason for
the erratic direction. He saw the footprints of a rabbit
and the dog was following the exact path of the rabbit's
tracks. A great example of not having a clue of what
people want by watching their actions. As Rick says, if
you discover the controlled variable, you can discover
what the person wants.
