Actually, Skinner's best book _by far_ is "Verbal Behavior," where
his "strength" model of behavior is clearest, even though it's
purely qualitative.

Maybe. Although I'm certainly seeing the same kind of in-group bravado
in PCT statements of the form "controlling perceptions is a FACT..."
(I haven't found it in the PCT literature I've been reading yet, so
maybe someone can tell me where "perception" is clearly defined,
or that "purpose" adds anything to understanding control mechanisms.)
Also, I'm sure we're all tired of the "cognitive revolution" with
its obligatory statement that Chomsky's review of "Verbal Behavior"
marked a Kuhnian paradigm shift; as far as I'm concerned, psychology
is pre-par adigmatic. Let's face it, almost everybody's kicked
Skinner around, usually while attacking a totally different kind of
behaviorism (check out BFS's 1945 paper, "The Operational Analysis
of Psychological Terms" for the first occurrence of the terms
"methodological behaviorism" versus "radical behaviorism.")

BP:

Not only do the
dozens of schools of thought ignore or disparage each other; they defend
themselves against each other and reject any attempts to remove the
walls. Each school considers itself the center of the intellectual
universe; all progress in psychology is progress in one's own field. I
won't say that such attitudes are unscientific, since they are obviously
demonstrated by numerous scientists, but I will say that I think this
attitude is stupid. It's the best possible way to prevent psychology
from ever becoming a unified scientific discipline.

We in PCT have always tried to be open to criticisms from any other
school of psychology. But with only a few outstanding exceptions, this
openness has gone only one way. Many people who have expressed an
interest in PCT have done so primarily to evaluate it as a threat to
positions they already hold. They are generous in offering difficult
problems for us to try to solve, but stingy when it comes to considering
problems we pose for them -- they are satisfied with their solutions,
and instead of discussing the matter they want only to show that they
have already solved the problems. To my mind, this sort of attitude
counts in evaluating whether the other person's approach is scientific.

Well, I hope I'm not doing this. But you have to admit, it just
doesn't pay off to overthrow the huge investment one may have in
a perspective every time one encounters a view that's different.
If we didn't have some "confirmation bias" we'd be chasing UFOs
around. I'll probably g et in trouble for this, but I say the biggest
impediment to a scientific psychology at this point in history
is theism. Babies are born atheists, given a supernatural rap
to account for their behavior, and then have to become "born again
atheists" to finally get clear on reasonable options... what a waste.
I regard theism as a mild form of mental retardation (but there I
go, trashing another point of view!)

As far as I know, nobody has
ever compared cumulative records obtained when (a) an organism
is operating the bar or key, and (b) an artificial device
programmed to behave arbitrarily is operating the bar or key.

     Not true. In the lab I worked in, we routinely ran programs to
    operate the devices used in operant conditioning experiments to
    test the equipment. Your statement sounds as if someone from the
    EAB camp would really be caught with their pants down on this one
    -- that you think it's amazing that nobody would ever think of
    doing this. Think again.

BP:

I wasn't lying. As far as I knew, what I said was true. Now I know more,
and evidently it wasn't true. I would really like to see the results you
got; can you cite some papers? I really haven't seen anything published
where behavioral results have been compared against a baseline produced
by a random behavior generator.

Sorry. Poor choice of words on my part (I forgot about the "as far as
I know" part). Like I said, we never thought the results of randomly
generating responses (via the computer) were interesting, so we didn't
save the data, let alone publish the results. If I get some time (with
two kids under 3, it ain't easy), I'll see if I can put tog ether a
simulation for concurrent VIs.

No. I would expect to see them in a control-system model of behavior,
and did, but not with random responding. I was talking, however, about
matching. Incidentally, any luck getting my operant behavior model
running?

You can see them in lots of models too. Since your published
statement was "many 'findings'" with matching given as "for example,"
so I didn't thinking that you were restricting it to matching. No
matter -- I think the random responding question is a good one, just
that EABers aren't going to be thrown any loops by this.

    Duh. Random responding on Concurrent VIs would not produce
    matching, my friend. It would produce the worse case of
    undermatching that anybody had ever seen.

BP:

Are you saying that it did, or that it would if anyone tried it? If it
has been tried, I'd like to see the results, and if not, shouldn't it be
done to get a baseline against which to evaluate the degree of matching
actually obtained? I can't tell whether you're speaking hypothetically
or reporting on actual results.

Hypothetically. I guess I should have run it, since I did an experiment
(referred to in an earlier CSG post) in which I considered the economic
maximization perspective to imply that random responding would have
produced the same overall rate of reinforcement as my pigeons who
matched pretty well (although one bird did a little "superstitious
dance" that resulted in some relatively more undermatching), and therefore
did not provide the more reasonable explanation that melioration
theory did.

BP:

How about an essay on the subject? I'd be very interested in knowing how
environmental events can set reference levels. I have some ideas, but
I'd like to hear yours first.

Unconditioned establishing operations, like food deprivation, are often
confusing enough (if you send me your snail mail address, I'll send you
a little paper on this), since Skinner said they don't affect learning,
just performance, but Jack Michael (Mr. Establishing Operation, and my main
mentor in grad school) says they affect both. Some of the more interesting
questions are how to explain what happens with unlearned motivations.

Here's an example Jack Michael uses a lot:
A repair person is fixing something and encounters plate that is held
by slotted (not phillips) screws and says to the assistant, "hand me
the flat screw driver." Is the sight of the slotted screw a discriminative
stimulus? Not really, because it's not as if there's a history of more
successfully getting the flat screw driver in its presence relative to
its absence -- the assistant would give Mr. Fixit the same tool when
asked regardless. So, it's closer to the effect of food deprivation:
the "value" of this kind of screwdriver goes up momentarily. Now, I
haven't learned a lot about PCT yet, but it sounds like there's a
reference level "established" related to having this screwdriver. A
variety of behaviors could reduce the error: asking for the screwdriver,
going to the toolbox, trying a thumbnail in lieu of the screwdriver,
etc. I won't go on at this point, since this may not coincide with
"dynamically setting a reference level," as I, in my relative ignorance,
might claim at this point.

By the way, I read your (BP's) article in the American Behavioral
Scientist where you show same-reference-level individuals versus
the whole population correlations. Superb. There may be a "trick"
in there that I didn't catch, but as far as I can see, this is
very convincing.

theory of control) explains control, and Perceptual Control Theory (which
is not identical with engineering control theory) is the variety of control
theory best suited to explaining control by living things.

Control = a readily observable (but most often unobserved) fact; control
theory = an explanation of the fact; PCT = the version of CT best suited to
explaining control by living things; PCT model = a testable form of the
theory.

There is no bravado in saying that control is a fact. There is "something"
(many things it has been said to be cannot be repeated in the polite
company on this net :slight_smile: in saying and demonstrating that the only thing a
control system can know it is controlling is some aspect of its own
perceptions. (Or its "perceptual signal", to use a more neutral term.)

Believe me, I really like the overall view as us as controlling our
perceptions. Bill Powers has superbly stated this in a way that's
really intuitive to me and it's clear that rigor is being applied.
However, the history of psychology reveals lots of concepts, like
"perception," that are invoke under so many different conditions
that one tends to distrust their usefulness as generic concepts on
which to build a science unless there's a convincing statement of
how we learn to, and continue to, talk about events that are
not public. And it's not that something public is the acid test,
it's just that unlike learning to say "square" in the presence of
a given geometric form is easily traced to a verbal community that
can correct me if I say "triangle" instead. It's tougher with private
events, like "perception."

Thanks. It goes without saying that I appreciate the responses to my
newcomer posts, since I'm undoubtedly learning more new things than
y'all are in the process. From what I've got so far, I can already
see value for me in PCT. I just don't know yet to what extent it would
help me to work toward a PCT-EAB synthesis, with equal status,
as opposed to taking on a more exclusive PCT perspective in such
matters. Time and learning will tell.

By the way, the typing in the post of mine you reference was a bit
screwy --- in discussing the "establishing operation" I say, "Some of
the more interesting questions are how to explain what happens with
unlearned motivations" when I should have said "learned motivations."

I PCT "perception" is a rigorously defined term. Indeed, the definition
is mathematically expressed.

Agreed. I'm just saying that "purpose" -- for my money -- doesn't add
anything to saying "reference signal," so I tend to think it's a
mistake, again, because of the dubious provinance of terms from the
vernacular.

And no one can "argue" with your stated opinion however... The term
"purpose" has usually intended to convey the idea that the acting being
is trying to bring about results for reasons that are (possibly)
independent of external influence. "Purposeful beings" is a concept that
has been a serious problem for "physical" behavioural science for many
years. Skinner (and others of course) expressed the idea that no matter
how we thought we might be functioning, we were still nothing more than
the "sum" of our experience. That is, it is the external world taken as
a whole that resulted in our "purposes".

One of the hypothesis of HPCT is that purpose no longer must be relegated
to such a mudane position. HPCT allows for purpose that is independent
of the external environment without also relying upon a dualistic view of
the physical world. It is, I think, this concept that lends strong
reasons for using the term "purpose" interchangeably with "reference".

"Reference" of course, is a rigorous term as used in PCT.

"Control" itself is the term that most generally causes us the most
difficulties. These difficulties start with the idea that PCT is about
how to "control" others (easiest problem to deal with). At the other
end of the scale are the many various ideas about control that are just
plain wrong (such as "control systems control their outputs").

The discussions here of CSG-L can lead observers to some very seriously
incorrect ideas as to what PCT is a science. PCT "rests" entirely on the
foundation based upon the exacting predictive capacity of generative
models. The discussions here OTOH often are nothing more than conjecture
("informed", yes) but still conjecture.

An example of "PCT science" is obtainable by examining the server digests
from last year and earlier this year where (primarily) Bill Powers and
Bruce Abbott were writing model programs based upon data from EAB
research. A great deal of conjecture is contained within that series but
it was the results of model prediction "that counted".

"Firm" conclusions of the sort acceptable to PCT were not obtained but
the nature of the missing observations were. Bruce has agreed to attempt
to collect this additional data in lab experiment. If this effort is
successful then it should be possible to create an operating control
system model that will predict the experimentally obtained results with a
high degree of correllation.

to be right on this, but, let me know if you think I doomed to
not understand PCT if I accept that "purpose" is as good as

As usual there will be a lot of terminology problems. Bruce has aided a
great deal in clearing up many misunderstandings concerning EAB (even
though it might not "sound" like it reading some of the more recent
traffic).

I don't know that it is very important to "buy" purpose but, if you don't
see how it is possible to "intentionally" bring about results without
history, memory or repertoire of possible behaviours then you will be "in
trouble" as far as understanding PCT is concerned.

Possibly one of the most difficult things to accept about PCT is that
many "behaviours" that are close to unexplainable or rely upon very
complex (and loose) explanations turn out to be the natural result of
interacting control systems.

In HPCT "purpose" is usually thought of as a "higher" level reference (as
in high in the hiearachy). For example, even "the cat 'wants out of the
box'" is a rather high level reference or purpose. The "purpose" of a
first level control loop is to control a tension perception by adjusting
the force applied by the associated muscle (but without any specific
knowledge with regard to what the error signal does or what actions
result). This "purpose" is OUR perception of the loop's purpose. Said
loop has no such knowledge of purpose. The only thing that said control
loop "knows" is that its' input signal value (what WE call perception)
has some relation to another input signal (what WE call reference).

This example control loop has no knowledge concerning where the reference
signal or even the perceptual signal comes from nor why.

Even when PCTers talk about the organism's intentions (purpose), we are
usually dealing with what we believe to be references but which are
normally well beyond any ability to map to a specific arrangement of
control loops. Whereas generally the term "reference" maps to at least a
diagram of control loops if not to specific instances in models.

B:CP should clear this up for you. HPCT postulates a set of references
called "intrinsic references". These references are the highest level
references and are "built in". It is quite likely that the "purpose" for
the intrinics is "fixed" for a particular species though the actually
value set might vary for instances of the species (and possibly may not).

The term "reorganization" is bantered about a great deal here on the net.
The generally accepted characteristics of this system are that it is
random in the effects of its' output and its' perception is the level of
error present in other control loops.

It is further generally accepted that this system is probably limited in
the scope of its' effect but with an inverse relationship to the level
and possibly the duration of the perception (error existing in other
systems).

Beyond that, there is not much agreement. Some believe that the system
has an active output most all the time. Others believe that operation of
the reorganizing system only occurs for sustained error or very large
error... and views exist for "in between".

The important point to realize about the reorganizing system is that 1)
it allows for the creation of control loops that have never existed
before and 2) the organism can set references completely independently of
external events (not that it necessarily will but rather that it can).
