Scratch this last. I evidently went under. As Poo would say,
"Oh Help AND Bother!" But perhaps it remains true that it is at
least as plausible as making error the focus (of attention ? . . .)

It appears that when one is too hasty and distracted to pay
attention (to perceptual input) there can be no error signals
(wrt that perceptual input). No gain, no pain, I suppose.
