Hal to Bruce on the crying infant

Thanks for the example, Bruce. I think it helps me. I've noticed two
parental definitions of an infant's cries: one that the child is
disturbed and needs quieting; one that the child is making a bid for
interaction and needs social stimulation. Here's an example of the
difference in how one defines manifestations of conflict. Among other
things the latter definition of the situation leads parents I see to
relax, and reinforces their enjoyment of the child's companionship.
The former definition does indeed seem to increase signs of
disturbance among all involved. l&p hal
