[From Rick Marken (2000.01.11.0730)]
I want to give kudos to two people who have made my life
a little more tolerable over the last week. First, kudos
to Jeff Vancouver on his recent paper "Analyzing Goal-Striving
Process...". This is really a fine paper. I hope you will
work hard to get it published; if the journal you sent it to
(I forget which it was) won't publish it I hope you will keep
at it until you get it into the literature. And I hope you
keep working on this line of research. You have really done an
excellent job of presenting PCT research in a language that
conventional psychologists can understand. But the most exciting
thing about the paper is that you describe _research_ based on
determining (by test and modeling) what perceptual variables an
_individual_ might be controlling. I think you might be the real
deal after all, Jeff. Bravo!
Second, kudos to Mary Powers for her cool letter to the New
Yorker. It's in the most recent (January 10) issue and I
discovered it as I was falling asleep last night; I remember
thinking "damn good letter", then seeing that the author was Mary
A. Powers in Durango, Colo., then thinking "what a coincidence,
another Mary Powers in Colorado" and then, finally, getting
it (how many Mary A. Powerses could there be in Durango; yes,
I'm even dumber than I look). Wonderful letter, Mary. I had
a nice, peaceful night's sleep.
Anyway, thanks to both of you for your helpful contributions
to my sense of the meaningfulness of life.
Best
Rick
