LUKEWARM ABOUT DME-RKC

Bill Powers (940422.0600 MDT) Subject: predictions; DME

This was the fourth topic in your post. To simplify the discussion,
I am experimenting with trying to keep each post to a single topic.

Lukewarm about DME. In your post you say:

Incidentally, Bob, one reason I'm lukewarm about your DME
(decision-making entity) is that it seems to require cognitive
functions that are not actually spelled out -- the same ones I have
tried to make explicit with my more numerous levels.

Also:

"Making decisions" seems to me too broad a term to describe a level.
Even "making predictions" is too broad, because by this term we mean
many different kinds of process.

Yes, "too broad to describe a level." But the DME is not conceived as
a "level." Memory and imagination are not "levels." The DME is an
"entity." It has access to the entire set of memories, whether
accidental, rote, planned, procedures, programs, or whatever. It
operates like a manager: it studies the situation, selects the
tactics, and determines the timing. It plans the long-term strategy
in seeking more effective skills, studies the strengths and
weaknesses of available programs, explores alternatives. It operates
outside the hierarchy of the individual with complete access to all
of its capabilities.

Yes, it has access to "cognitive functions that are not actually
spelled out." It has access to those you have made explicit so
effectively. It also has access to others that have not yet been
delineated. It has access to each and every system that you have now
and it will have access to any you may acquire in the future. In a
word, it IS YOU.
