I know this is not news. Might help one's perspective to remember that
psychologists are not the only researchers with conflicts between a
successful career and the practice of scientific method.

From an article by Charles Platt on marginalized physicists researching

ways of interfering with gravity (Wired 6.03 (March 1998) p. 202):

"The history of science is littered with casualties who ventured too far
from the main stream ... Nikola Tesla is a classic example. Even Robert
Goddard, the legendary rocketry pioneer, was scorned and forced to work in
isolation and poverty for most of his life.

"As one physicist told me, "New ideas are always criticized -- not because
an idea lacks merit, but because it might turn out to be workable, which
would threaten the reputations of many people whose opinions conflict with
it. Some people may even lose their jobs.

"The man who said this is an eminent physicist who started devising
equipment to detect gravity waves 30 years ago. Despite his secure tenure
and respected status, he still wouldn't let me quote him by name, because
he suffered in the past when he promoted radical concepts of his own."

The encounter with the True Believer (p. 176) is instructive--failing to
test alternative explanations that the writer and photographer saw --
especially when contrasted with the folks at NASA saying "We only saw this
a couple of times. We have to see it 100 times before we'll allow ourselves
to reach any conclusions. And then we'll get the Bureau of Standards in
here to check it out, and then, maybe, we'll publish a paper."

The commitment of people in CSG to doing good science is very impressive.

Apropos science, I recommend reading (I mean, I am in the middle) R.A.
Wilson, The new Inquisition, which is a very nice attack on the
scientific establishment. The is the second of his books that I am
reading (the first, Quantum Psychology seemed even better). After
reading such a book it is hard to argue that Behavior IS the control
of perception (or anything else) - in fact, he suggests to abolish the
word "is" from the lexicon. (Some of his terminology I re-used in
arguing with some members of the PCT mini-establishment in certain
anti-Christ postings, which apparently were insensible to the some
sensitivities - I promise to try not to do it again.)

Anyway, to be useful, let me recommend a very good book on differential
equations, which I wish existed some decades ago when I needed it.

It's a preliminary version of Diff. Eq., Blanchard, Devaney and Hall,
Brooks/Cole publishing company. The nice thing about it is that it combines
from the beginning the dynamical system geometric approach, with the
numerical analysis point of view and the algebraic manipulation point
of view (which is mostly what one learns in engineering school without
understanding what one is talking about - at least it was my case).
