Announcing THE MANAGEMENT ARCHIVE
The MANAGEMENT ARCHIVE is an entirely free, state of the art electronic forum
for management ideas and information of all kinds. The Archive provides
easy, free Internet access to contributed working papers and preprints in the
management and organizational sciences, recent paper calls, course syllabi
and teaching materials, conference announcements, archives of Academy of
Management and management-related discussion lists, easy connections to other
relevant Internet resources, and other important information and notices
pertaining to the Academy and to the research, education, and practice of
management. The Archive is designed as mechanism to share information and
work-in- process that may not yet be ready for publication, but is ready for
consideration and comment by your colleagues throughout the world.
The MANAGEMENT ARCHIVE is an Internet information archive and server,
using the Gopher system developed at the University of Minnesota. Gopher
is a software program that allows one to create an information archive on a
computer server that can be accessed over the Internet network. Gopher also
makes it easy to access other Gopher and information servers throughout the
world. Anyone, anywhere with Gopher client software can access information
stored on any public gopher server.
The MANAGEMENT ARCHIVE arranges working papers, teaching materials, etc.
in directories by subject and management discipline. All materials on the
Archive are fully indexed and searchable. In other words, when you access
the Archive, you can peruse the latest working papers or course syllabi
by discipline, by topic, or you can search for a key word or phrase and
construct a "hit list" of all documents in the Archive meeting your search
specifications. You may then peruse this information at your leisure.
For example, a search of the Archive for anything pertaining to "leadership"
might turn up recent working papers, course materials, a call for papers,
and a conference announcement, all pertaining to the subject of leadership.
If you find a document you would like to download, simply tell gopher to
save the file. Automagically, you have a computer copy of the paper, without
wasting time, postage, or suffering the slightest bit of guilt over forest
destruction!
Using The Management Archive
Access to THE MANAGEMENT ARCHIVE is very easy! For those of you who have
direct Internet access from your personal computer or workstation, using
Gopher is simple. Just download the FREE Gopher client software for your
particular computer using the Internet FTP protocol as described below (a
Gopher "client" is the local gopher program that runs on your computer or
mainframe and talks to network Gopher servers like the Management Archive.
Once you have the software, decompress, unzip, or convert it as necessary
and you're ready to go. Use the configuration menu in your Gopher program to
point "chimera.sph.umn.edu", and you'll be instantly connected to the Archive.
For those of you who do not have direct Internet access from your personal
computer, but access your e-mail and other network tools through a mainframe
or minicomputer, contact your system administrator first. Many academic
computer centers have already installed Gopher on their mainframes. In
this case, access to the Management Archive is simple. Just log on to
your mainframe account, and type "gopher chimera.sph.umn.edu" from any
the system prompt. Direct connections to the Internet from DOS personal
computers, Macintoshes, or Unix workstations are usually MUCH faster and
more flexible for using Gopher. If you have the option, get the client for
your PC/workstation and access Gopher directly, rather than using a mainframe
program.
If your local computer center or mainframe does not have Gopher installed,
contact your system administrator and request it. If they refuse or are
unable to install Gopher on your system, you can still access the Management
Archive by using telnet to connect to one of the publicly available Gopher
login sites detailed below. Once you connect, look for The Management Archive
under "Other Gopher and Information Servers/All Gophers in the World/".
Obtaining the Gopher Software
You can get Gopher software by anonymous FTP to boombox.micro.umn.edu. Look
in the directory /pub/gopher. Make sure you download in binary format. You
can also download Gopher software directly from The Management Archive. Look
in the Gopher Gateway Services directory. If you need help with FTP, contact
your system administrator.
You will need a gopher "client" program that runs on your local PC, Macintosh,
workstation, or mainframe. There are clients for the following systems. The
directory following the name is the location of the client on the anonymous
FTP site boombox.micro.umn.edu (134.84.132.2) in the directory /pub/gopher.
DOS (w/packet drivers): /pub/gopher/PC_client/
Macintosh: /pub/gopher/Macintosh-TurboGopher/*
Unix : /pub/gopher/Unix/gopher+2.0.tar.Z
OS/2 2.0: /pub/gopher/os2/
VM/CMS: /pub/gopher/Rice_CMS/ or/pub/gopher/VieGOPHER/
VMS: /pub/gopher/VMS/
MVS/XA: /pub/gopher/mvs/
NeXTstep: /pub/gopher/NeXT/
Xwindows: /pub/gopher/Unix/xgopher.1.3.tar.Z
Contributing to The Management Archive
Your participation is essential to the success of this project. Obviously
there will be no working papers or teaching materials to place on the archive
unless you contribute your papers to the Archive. We promise a rejection
rate of ZERO!. If you present papers at the Academy of Management or other
professional meetings, and are receiving requests for copies, save paper and
hassle by putting them on the Archive! If you have a paper or papers that you
would like to see receive worldwide network exposure and distribution, submit
them to the Archive in one of two ways:
1. If you have direct Internet access from your personal computer,
workstation or mainframe, connect by anonymous FTP to chimera.sph.umn.edu
(use your e-mail address as password). Change to the pub/incoming
directory, and use the FTP "put" command to upload your document.
If you have trouble with this procedure, get help from a colleague or
your system administrator.
2. Alternatively, you may send your paper via Internet or BITNET mail to:
MA@chimera.sph.umn.edu
Complete details on submission are available on the Archive. Papers should
be sent in either simple text (ASCII) or TEX format. Text files should
be formatted and single-spaced (i.e. normal text, including centering and
indents are fine). We will accept but discourage documents in proprietary
formats (e.g. WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, or other word processor format)
since this limits the accessibility of your material to other network users.
ASCII files are readily accessible to all users but cannot include embedded
graphics (because of Internet/BITNET mail restrictions). TEX files, however,
will retain any graphics embedded in your document. Contact your local
computer consultant for help in generating and uploading a TEX document, or
converting a TEX-format manuscript that you have downloaded.
In a mail message (to MA@chimera.sph.umn.edu) accompanying your submission
(whichever method you use), identify all authors and co-authors, affiliations,
phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Also specify the broad area of management
research (e.g. organizational behavior, strategy and policy, international
management ) and topic or topics (e.g. CEO succession, turnover, leadership,
etc.) under which you would like your paper classified, as well as 4-5 key
words that capture important elements of your paper. Submissions in TEX or
proprietary formats should include a one-page paper abstract in simple text,
which will provide all users access to a summary of your paper.
A Few Caveats ...
We think the MANAGEMENT ARCHIVE is an innovative idea with considerable
potential to improve the flow of ideas, knowledge, and substantive learning
between researchers and practitioners and across the management academy.
The success of this notion depends entirely on your willingness and trust
in submitting your work and your ethical participation in reviewing that of
others.
Obviously submitting your paper to the MANAGEMENT ARCHIVE makes it publicly
available to anyone with Internet access. While this can provide an
incredibly large and diverse forum for disseminating your ideas, it also can
be subject to abuse. We recommend that every paper submitted to the Archive
include a copyright statement by the author and a clear statement of ownership
of ideas. We will time-stamp every manuscript submitted to the Archive to
establish the date of first submission of a manuscript. If you do not want
your work quoted or cited, make that clear. In no case are papers to be
copied and uploaded elsewhere without the author's permission.
The MANAGEMENT ARCHIVE is still under development, and we welcome any
suggestions, feedback or advice on this project. Just send us a message at
MA@chimera.sph.umn.edu. If you need any further information or help in using
the Archive, please feel free to contact us by e-mail or phone.
