multiple requests

[Martin Taylor 931218 1230]

I left town on Thursday morning, and came back this morning (Saturday) to
find 75 unread messages (not all from CSG-L--autopoeisis is getting to be
just as wordy!). Several of these messages ask that I continue the discussion
on physics and CSG, and that I reopen the information-theory thread. I am
mindful of net-God Cziko's comment that he did not read my postings because
they contained too much information (or "information"--I never did find out).

The reason I proposed to Tom Bourbon a private dialogue was that I could
tune what I would write in such a dialogue to the questions that bothered
him, based on his current understanding. I cannot do this in a public
dialogue. It has been overwhelmingly demonstrated that there is a great
deal of difference in people's basic understanding of both physics and
information-theoretic concepts. In one-on-one dialogue, these problems
can be handled and developed in a way that progresses to some level of
mutual understanding. In public dialogue all that happens is that each
attempt to respond to a question leads to multiple other questions that
could be answered by a look at ordinary texts, or by apparently authoritative
statements that are incorrect.

I have no better guarantee of being correct than does anyone else, but
since everyone seems to want me to explain what I am talking about, I have
to operate as if I am correct.

If Gary Cziko adds his voice to those wanting me to reopen the discussion,
I might consider doing so. Until then, one-on-one.

But I suppose I could try a one-ball-at-a-time description of a vortex.

Back on Monday, probably.
