I discovered a nice introduction to neural basics for rank amateurs like
myself. The book is _Creating Mind: How the Brain Works_ by John. E. Dowling
(who is also the author of a textbook on neuroscience). The book is very
clear, well illustrated, and mercifully brief (200 pages). It was recently
published by W.W. Norton. I got my copy from Amazon.com.
