PCT, parkinson & Aexander Technique

In reading some of your material Bill I came accross your mention of John
Dewey. You were saying that your view of behavior corresponded with Dewey's
closed loop [reflex circuit] view. This led me to research Dewey and I
discovered his favorable comments about the Alexander Technique. As a
result I read all of Alexander's books and a half dozen others. Last summer
I started "lessons" here in Philly and ultimately took about 40 hours of
them.

I have been helped to experienced astounding changes in my life. Among them
a sense of having more space and time, and a corresponding improvement in
patience and tolerence. Giving more of myself over to a task, and the
experience of having given something to myself. A reduction in pain from
arthritic problems of as much as 80-90 %. To name only a few.

Alexander was very much against the incorporation of stimulus response as a
complete picture of behavior and utilized concious inhibition as part of his
system. His book "the Universal Constant" clearly presents control as the
common, primary ingrediant in all behavior. "compressed copy attatched"

Because of my aquaintance with PCT I look for ways to look at AT through PCT
and at PCT through AT. I have found a multitude of websites dealing with AT
but none that have impressed me as much as one I found today. It is the most
scientific I have seen.

It particullarly caught my attention because in one of the papers it
mentions "increased autonomy" in persons with parkinsons disease.

There are several papers covering the influence of AT in people with
Parkinson's. The material is well presented, and may afford some material
to examine in PCT terms of the nervous sysytem hierarchy.

I never know how to respond to communications like this. You’re telling
me that the Alexander Technique has received high praise and has been of
great help to you in many ways, which is not exactly an invitation to me
to be honest about what I think. I did legalize my WinRAR (for $29,
thanks a lot) so I could decode the attachment, and I read some of the
material, so I got the flavor of it. After some cogitation, I decided
that my only tactful course would be to tell you what I told my older
daughter.

My older daughter is a practitioner of Bowen Body Therapy, which seems to
be primarily a way of calling attention to various muscle systems by
gentle manipulations that excite spinal reflexes. Like the Alexander
Technique, it is remarkably effective, as I can attest from having tried
it. But also, like the Alexander Technique, it is backed up by a lot of
loose verbiage and guesswork about what is going on behind the
scenes.

My advice to my daughter was “Please don’t try to explain how Bowen
Body Therapy works. The explanations are mostly nonsense – a lot of
words from textbooks strung together, with no theory at all to give them
substance. It works: be satisfied with that. If you rely on the
explanations that come with it, you will just bamboozle people who don’t
know any better, which isn’t nice, and when you come across someone who
does know better you will just look foolish, which isn’t nice,
either.” That’s basically what I would recommend when talkiing about
the Alexander Technique, too.

Of course I don’t expect her, or you, to pay much attention to that, but
if you really wanted my opinion, there it is. If you didn’t want it, you
shouldn’t have asked for it.

As to “autonomy” being a variable, anything that can vary is a
variable. So if there are varying degrees of autonomy, then yes, autonomy
is a variable – in PCT or any other context. Can it be a controlled
variable? If you can perceive different degrees of autonomy, and have a
preference for a particular amount of it, and know what to do to match
the perceived amount to the desired amount (such as using the Alexander
Technique or the Bowen method, or anything else that works), then
autonomy is a controlled variable.

Okay. You are saying that you do not feel invited to be honest. I think that is probably a connection you make internally, I am not sure I understand the connection. I am confused. Is there something I am missing? Maybe you feel that because it has helped me you have to be super cautious about not threatening its usefulness to me. I am just guessing of course because I want to understand and I would appreciate a little more help from you in discovering why my telling you those things seems to you to preclude your being honest. There must be some higher system telling you something that it believes is true but is not true. There was conflict so did you go up a level or down to talk to me.

As can I. But that is what makes me feel that I have a responsibility to understand it in a more concrete way so that I can make it more usefull.

Absolutely. Trying to wade through those books took a great deal of effort. Wading through all the books on PCT also took a lot of effort. In both cases I am compelled to do my best to first comprehend what is being said with the words being used and accept the terminology of the system in order to have a meaningful experience and then to go back and critically read and reread, and rereread. In both cases I found inconsistent usage, conceptual and logic problems.

Some of the conceptual problems I have with PCT are:

I've also been told that PCT may provide someone with MORE control. Rick Markin's psychologist friend has said that people seeking help are seeking more control.

This is not much different from the Alexander technique which claims to help develope more sensory appreciation. Is a PCT presentation more concise, more succinct? More scientific? Yes. Is it problem free? No. Does that mean you are "bamboozling" people? No.

If all behavior is autonomous control of behavior then the bamboozled controlled for it. I don't quite believe that.

In my first post over a year ago I asked if PCT was about some or all behavior and was told all behavior. Later I read the book and got a different answer. In "Making Sense of behavior" you say PCT "is about a kind of behavior".

Are you saying that some kinds of behavior are not PC? That is not the same as saying all behavior is the control of perception. Is this loose verbiage?

I would say also that PCT IS behavior and that its incorporation by an individual results in behavior modification. Part of the modification is the result of thinking in terms of "controlled perception". That is part of "how it works" That means that PCT is a behavior modifier. You have said that "There is something strict" about PCT. Why? There is something strict about all theories, the strictness and discipline required to maintain a commitment to the created system. Does PCT require a different kind of strictness? There could be a theory of strictness as well.

The same holds true for AT and BBT. The terminology and maybe even the looseness of that terminology is part of "how it works". Both AT and BT emphasise "process". Both AT and BBT are controlled perceptions, which claim to address problem perceptions. Therefore they must come under the purview of PCT.

Is PCT not a controlled perception and therefore come under its own purview. In that controlling, terminology comprises some of the controlled peceptions and participates in bringing about modification.

If I choose to relinquish control is that a controlled perception? In the case of letting go has a higher system changed a lower systems reference signal?

Another problem for me, and it may be for others as well is the claim that as Rick Marken has said, "we control perception not the reference signals". Well if I have no control over the reference signals, who does? How much control do I really have?

Where does the highest system get its reference signals from? Itself?.
If so, how does that highest system manage to be structured differently from all the lower systems? These are unanswered questions that might make some people think you are trying to bamboozle. I don't think you are. I think they are indicative of some of the difficulties we face when using words.

My advice to my daughter was "Please don't try to explain how Bowen
Body Therapy works. The explanations are mostly nonsense -- a lot of

I would say a lot of theory, loosely formed, little scientific substance. What I am hoping to be able to do is to go beyond the explanations that they provide and find more scientific explanations descriptions, one of which may be PCT. You may be reluctant however to have PCT associated with a quasy quacky method even if it does work. With your understanding of the nervous system I thought perhap you could shed some light on the details of the "what's happening" part. You indicated that spinal reflexes may be excited, I will start there and do some research further. Thanks. However, I doubt if spinal reflexes alone can account for the changes I experienced. It is more like changes at much higher levels; at what you have termed the system and principle levels. In some way, what you call reorganization was facilitated to a very high degree. It is difficult for me to understand why this would not be of interest to you. Maybe some higher system in you says it has little value. One thing I can tell you is that my internal dialogue increased many fold. This is not a spinal reflex as I understand it.

It works: be satisfied with that. If you rely on the

I don't and won't. But I believe it merits investgating more scientifically. In particular I believe it has possibilities in supportive of PCT. On the other hand it may not be in the same class as PCT and not worthy of association.

about the Alexander Technique, too.

Very good advice, Thank you. That is why I want a deeper understanding. I am inhibiting, controlling for a perception of deeper understanding, before I embark on on a sales pitch.

There has been and continues to be a great deal of discussion on CSG over the meanings of PCT terminology, their limits. And yet it is presented as the final description of how things work, as though there is no loose verbiage. I would not call that bamboozling. I would call it a work in process.

Of course I don't expect her, or you, to pay much attention to that,
but if you really wanted my opinion, there it is. If you didn't want
it, you shouldn't have asked for it.

If by paying attention you mean give up a persuit to understand more scientifically. I probably won't. . You certainly did not give up your quest to describe all behavior scientifically. If you mean Don't use their loose verbiage, I am already commited to not doing that. That is why I asked for any insight you might have.

Are you being feisty? Or apologetic? Or what? I can't know without hearing your voice. I appreciate everything you say, do my best to understand it, ask for clarification when I need it, [and have the time] and do my best to clearly state why I disagree if I disagree. Your answer is helpfull. That is all I wanted.

Perhaps you are doing as philosophers seem often to do: using a word in more than one way but treating it as though it meant the same thing each time.

"More" control could mean several things. It could mean more effective control of the same set of variables. It could mean control of more variables. Neither of these correspond to your concept of "B increasing or P decreasing". What would that concept imply anyway?

When "Rick Markin's psychologist friend has said that people seeking help are seeking more control" I would read that as meaning that they would like to have less error in the perceptions they are trying to control -- to be more effective in control. I would not read it as meaning that they want to control more perceptions than they currently are. And I would not read it as meaning they wanted to execute more behaviour (which seems to be the concept you imply).

"All behaviour is the control of perception" is a shorthand for something like "every purposeful action is executed because at least one controlled perception differs from the reference value for that perception". It doesn't mean that the actions actually do reduce the error. That would be _effective_ control. For some controlled perceptions, none of the actions tried by the person actually work to reduce the error, but the behaviour nevertheless is, in the shorthand, "the control of perception", and if an action is hit upon that does reduce the error, control does become effective.

There's no inconsistency between "all behaviour is the control of perception" and " people seekign help are seeking more control."

Our behaviour (or behavior if you want to be a Websterish colonial :slight_smile: in the sense of walking, playing chess, and so forth, can equally well be thought of as the direct effects (not side effects) of controlling for a perception of onesself walking, or of onesself playing chess. Muscle tensions, visual patterns and the like are lower level perceptions controlled becasue their reference values are set by the outputs of the higher level "perception of me walking" control system(s).

What I would think of as an observable side effect of controlling a perception of walking is the sound of the shoe on the pavement, the creation of the footmark in the soil, and any other unintended consequence of controlling the perception. One important kind of side-effect might be that if person P saw person Q going into a particular building, P might perceive some intention on the part of Q that caused some error in a controlled perception of P, and P therefore might act in some way. P's action would be a side-effect of Q's control of the "walking" perception. Such side-effects can lead to social structure.

I don't think it's at all legitimate to call our higher-level behaviour a side-effect of the lower level control of perceptions through which the higher-level actions are implemented.

"Side effect" may not be the best term, but it works for me. What I
meant is that the behaviour of an agent, as seen by an observer, is
the control of perceptions by the agent -- perceptions that cannot
possibly be experienced by the observer if only because the observer
is outside of the agent. Walking is a good example. It's not just the
lower order controlled perceptions -- like varying muscle tensions --
that cannot be experienced by the observer. It is the higher level
perceptions as well, like the perception of the event "taking a step".
The agent's perception of this event is not the same as the observer's
perception of it. The observer perceives a limb moving into a pivot
position, the other limb swinging past the pivot limb and landing to
become the new pivot. The agent perceives a force in one limb, a
swinging feeling in the other that eventually ends in a force coming
from that limb. It is in this sense that what the observer perceives
as an agent's "behavior" such as "taking a step" is a side effect of
what the agent perceives and controls.

So when I hear someone say "behavior is the control of perception" it
reminds me that what I see as behavior is not what the behaving agent
is "doing". What the agent is doing is controlling perceptions that I
can't see from the agent's perspective. The behavior I see is a side
effect of that controlling: behavior, in other words, is the
observer's view of the process of perceptual control. Or, more simply,
behavior is the control of perception.

One of my favorite demonstrations of the fact that behavior is the
control of perception is the ethological demonstration of a "fixed
action pattern" in the egg rolling behavior of the gray lag goose.
When an egg rolls out of its nest the goose rolls it back in by
tucking it behind its bill and moving it back up carefully by bending
its neck. When the egg is removed in mid course the goose continues
making the movements it would have made if the egg were still there.
It looks like the goose's behavior is the neck bending motion that
rolls off as a fixed action pattern -- an event that continues with or
without the egg. But I have developed a simple simulation that makes
the case that what the goose is actually doing is controlling the
perception of pressure against the back of its bill; when the egg is
removed the goose keeps moving its neck in the same direction to try
to restore the pressure. To an observer the goose's behavior is a
fixed action pattern (movement of the neck and bill); from a PCT
perspective this behavior is a side effect of the gooses efforts to
control a perception (of pressure against the back of the bill).

and helpful, I don’t think the expected response is for me to say that
this idea is worthless. So the choices are that either I say nothing, or
I say what I really think, neither of which will satisfy what we both
want to happen. You’re quite right in guessing that there is a conflict.
There is. But this time I decided to describe the conflict and not just
suffer from it.
But you will not understand it in a more concrete way just by studying a
lot of words lifted without understanding from a textbook. Or words like

At first reading this sound impressive, but on second reading it says
nothing. What are the processes of conceiving, reasoning, and
understanding? He doesn’t say, and as far as I have seen, never does
say.

I hope it was an effort of a completely different kind. PCT is founded on
a theoretical framework and a method of modeling that have been worked
out (not by me) in careful detail from the ground up, with much
experimentation and practical application to back up the details of the
theory. There is a lot to understand and I am not surprised that it is
difficult for you, as it was for me. But what makes Alexander’s book hard
to read is precisely the lack of things to understand – you have to
labor to infer some kind of meaning from the words he uses, and there is
no help from him because it never occurs to him that his meanings are not
everybody’s. What does he mean by conceiving, reasoning, and
understanding? All we can do is use our own private meanings, because he
doesn’t say. You’re just supposed to know.

But that means that your “meaningful experience” is being
constructed by you out of your own experiences, which are not
Alexander’s.

Rick’s explanation is correct, as is Martin’s. To expand the slogan,
behavior is the visible part of the process by which people act on their
environments to control what they perceive of the environment (or
themselves).

I’ve also been told
that PCT may provide someone with MORE control.

You haven’t been told that by me. Does Newton’s theory of gravity provide
us with more gravity? PCT might help a person who has been trying to
control something he or she can’t perceive or affect, just by showing why
that is impossible. But it doesn’t cause more or less control. It
explains control, or lack of it.

You seem to be confusing an abbreviation with a mathematical formula.
What you wrote says that the quantity B is equal to the quantity C times
the quantity P. Whether that’s true depends on what definitions you give
the three variables. B:CP is an abbreviation of “Behavior: the
Control of Perception.” It has nothing to do with mathematics, etc.
– no more that etc has to do with the expression e times t times
c.

In other words if

This is not much different from the Alexander technique which claims to

I try very hard not to bamboozle people. Alexander seem to enjoy doing
so. What is the technical meaning of “sensory
appreciation”?

I do. The bamboozled wish to get a feeling of understandingness, which is
not the same as actual understanding since it can be done without
actually understanding anything. So they work and work at putting
meanings into what they are trying to understand until they get that
feeling, and then they are satisfied. The bamboozler, of course, uses
language designed to allow any interpretation you wish to use, avoiding
mathematics completely, which makes it easy for the bamboozlee to create
the desired perception.

In my first post
over a year ago I asked if PCT was about some or all behavior and was
told all behavior. Later I read the book and got a different
answer. In “Making Sense of behavior” you say
PCT “is about a kind of
behavior”.

A kind of behavior that …? Finish the sentence. Falling off a building
is not the kind of behavior that PCT is about (though jumping off might
be). PCT is not about the behavior of a firecracker, or a lever, or an
automobile (save for the cruise control). Don’t invest too much energy in
understanding common-language terms.

Are you saying that
some kinds of behavior are not PC? That is not the same as saying
all behavior is the control of perception. Is this loose
verbiage?

No. “Behavior” is the loose verbiage as ordinarily used because
it applies to anything that happens. Ordinary terms need to be defined in
PCT terms before they can be used technically. The title of my book is a
very terse technical definition of behavior.

I would say also
that PCT IS behavior and that its incorporation by an individual results
in behavior modification.

I can’t grasp what you mean. A theory “is” behavior, all by
itself? And “behavior modification?” Are you aware that
behavior modification is also a technical term in a different theoretical
system based on the concept of operant conditioning? And what do you mean
by “behavior” – do you mean the output actions that affect the
environment, or the consequences of those actions that affect the
behaving system? Moving your fingernail against your skin, or scratching
an itch?

Part of the
modification is the result of thinking in terms of “controlled
perception”. That is part of “how it
works” That means that PCT is a behavior
modifier.

You’re confusing two antithetical theoretical systems. The only
“behavior modifier” in PCT is the central nervous system. But
of course we don’t use that term, because we know it will invite educated
listeners think of the wrong set of concepts.

You have said that “There is something strict” about PCT.
Why?

More to the point, when and where? If I ever used that quoted expression
I don’t remember it, and certainly don’t use it now. I don’t even know
what I meant, if I used those words. The lack of context or a reference
makes it hard to see what I intended here, if indeed I ever said
that.

There is something
strict about all theories, the strictness and discipline required to
maintain a commitment to the created system.

That’s fanaticism, not mathematical rigor. Believing makes it so, which
is the Walt Disney approach to theory. Are you sure I didn’t use the term
“rigor”? I have used that term.

Does PCT require a
different kind of strictness? There could be a theory of strictness
as well.

PCT, like any scientific approach, requires defining terms and using them
consistently according to well-defined procedures, which is the basis of

The same holds true
for AT and BBT. The terminology and maybe even the looseness of
that terminology is part of “how it
works”.

No, the terminology is designed to give the appearance of
scientific rigor without actually providing it, and has nothing to do
with how those procedures actually work. At present, nobody knows how
they really work.

Both AT and
BT emphasise “process”. Both AT and BBT are controlled
perceptions, which claim to address problem
perceptions. Therefore they must come under the purview of
PCT.

They emphasize the word “process”, but do they ever say what it
means? I think you will find that you’re just sort of supposed to know. I
don’t know what you mean by saying that AT and BBT, which are physical
procedures, are controlled perceptions. Are they carried out by
controlling certain perceptions? Probably, but I’m only guessing at what
you mean.

Is PCT not a
controlled perception and therefore come under its own purview. In
that controlling, terminology comprises some of the controlled peceptions
and participates in bringing about modification.

Oh, come on. Terminology participates in bringing about modification? How
does terminology do that? What does “participates in” mean?
What modifications of what system? You’re just flinging words around
now.

If I choose to
relinquish control is that a controlled perception? In the case of
letting go has a higher system changed a lower systems reference
signal?

Of course. Perceptions can be controlled to match high reference levels
or low ones, even zero. A zero perception means not perceiving any of
some variable. You can set your reference level for experiencing whatever
you mean by “control” to zero, and you will then act in
whatever way is possible that will reduce your perception of controlling
to zero. Of course you will still be controlling. If you actually ceased
all control, you would drop dead.

Another problem for
me, and it may be for others as well is the claim that as Rick Marken has
said, “we control perception not the reference signals”. Well
if I have no control over the reference signals, who does? How much
control do I really have?

If you have to ask that question, you need to study hierachical
perceptual control theory, which explains why reference signals vary and
what varies them.

Where does the
highest system get its reference signals from?
Itself?.

In B:CP I explain that since there are no control systems higher than the
actual highest level of control (whatever it is), we have to propose some
other sources for the highest reference signals. They might be set
genetically, they might be a sort of average value of the perceptual
signals at the highest level, they might exist as thresholds in the input
functions, they might be set by reorganization, or they might simply be
zero (a zero reference signal says “maintain this perception at
zero” – i.e., avoid it). Since we don’t know the truth, and the
truth may not be the same for every highest-level control system, all we
can do is make hypotheses and try to devise ways to test them. Nobody has
done that yet.

If so, how does
that highest system manage to be structured differently from all the
lower systems?

Your guess is as good as mine, as long as it’s just as testable as
mine.

These are
unanswered questions that might make some people think you are trying to
bamboozle. I don’t think you are. I think they are indicative
of some of the difficulties we face when using
words.

That’s what I said in B:CP: they are unanswered questions. Is that
bamboozlement?

My advice to my
daughter was "Please don’t try to explain how Bowen

Body Therapy works. The explanations are mostly nonsense – a lot of

words from textbooks strung together, with no theory at all to give

them substance.

You may be reluctant however to have PCT associated with a quasy quacky
method even if it does work. With your understanding of the nervous
system I thought perhap you could shed some light on the details of the
“what’s happening” part.

I’m not reluctant at all. But you don’t find a PCT explanation of such
phenomena just by sitting and thinking about them. The only useful
explanation will come from systematic experimentation and
hypothesis-testing. I’m not in a position to do that, but anyone else is
welcome to tackle it.

You
indicated that spinal reflexes may be excited, I will start there and do
some research further. Thanks. However, I doubt if spinal
reflexes alone can account for the changes I
experienced.

I’d be surprised if they did, since many of the changes that occur are
cognitive. Indeed, resolving conflicts can resolve many physical
problems. Many therapies that are nominally physical give people a chance
to experience reorganization at many levels, and I know of cases in which
the person was dead set against “psychotherapy” but perfectly
happy to experience it as long as it was called something else.

By doing research, do you mean you’re going to get some equipment to
study spinal reflexes and see what happens, or that you’re going to read
what other people have said about it?

My impression of
basic the PCT position is that all behavior is autonomous. Maybe I took
it too literally but if not then that also sounds like a contradiction or
at least loose verbiage.

As long as we stick to informal language there are bound to be loose
statements and ambiguities. In case of doubt, use the rigorous vocabulary
of PCT in which one word always has one meaning and different people
describe things the same way. “Behavior” is not a word that is
useful in most technical discussions unless you supply a more detailed
definition of what you’re talking about. “Autonomy” is another
word that needs careful definition.

One (to me) significant difference between PCT and most psychological theory is that most psychological theories begin with asserted psychological constructs, whereas to understand PCT you have to get the basic concepts from outside psychology. PCT starts with general assertions that have no intrinsic link to psychology, but that nevertheless MUST apply in the psychological domain.

There's nothing wrong with developing a theory that starts with assertions within the domain of the theory. If the theory maintains self-consistency and matches observed (preferably experimental) data, it's useful. But it is self-contained, outside the structure of unified science until its founding assertions can be given some form or basis in external terms.

PCT starts from foundations in thermodynamics. The basic thermodynamic assertion is that all structures are subject to influences from the environment that will destroy them over time (it's called entropy). There are three ways to delay this effect of environmental influence: (1) construct a barrier or shell to reduce the ability of the environment to influence the structure; (2) use a through energy flow to repair damages as they occur; and (3) use a through energy flow actively to oppose the damaging influences before they can inflict actual damage.

None of these approaches is perfect, and living systems use all of them. (1) can be seen in cell membranes and the skins, shells, or bark of living organisms; (2) is in the repair processes involved in so many facets of life, from wound healing down to DNA repair; (3) is the realm that is studied in PCT. At heart, PCT is a branch of thermodynamics.

Because PCT rests on assertions outside of the domain to which it is applied, its hypotheses and can be tested not only against the observed data of its domain (psychology, for now), but also for consistency with the laws of thermodynamics. For example, one implication from (3, above) is that internal to the structure being protected there must be a representation of the potentially damaging environmental influence (PDEI), and that representation must be at a substantially lower energy level than the energy level of the influence itself. The representation is needed so that the structure can create the countervailing influence, which in turn implies that the structure must be able to manipulate an external energy source that can oppose or deflect the PDEI.

Already we have the essential component of PCT -- the control loop with a low-energy perceptual signal influencing a high energy action so as to maintain something (the internal representation) in the state it "should" be. A Perceptual Control System is, thermodynamically, a refrigerator.

Basic thermodynamics seems to require that living systems (self-maintaining structures as individual organisms) use perceptual control in some way or other.

At this point, we have the assertion "Some behaviour is the control of perception" rooted in a body of knowledge outside biology or psychology. It remains to see whether the same kind of argument can be used to change "some" into "all". I think one can, but only in a probabilistic way, just as the thermodynamic assertion about entropy always increasing in a closed system can be asserted only probabilistically.

The argument is by what in mathematics would be a non-probabilistic reductio ad absurdum. Let us suppose that there is some behaviour (high-energy action upon the environment, where "high-energy" means appreciably above the random thermal energy of the environment). Let us also suppose that this behaviour does not oppose any PDEI. By virtue of its high-energy nature, it increases the energy available in the environment at the cost of energy available to the structure (organism) for opposing PDEI. Both render the structure more liable to environmental damage, and less likely to survive in its "correct" form.

An organism less likely to survive to any given age is also one that is less likely to produce successors with its characteristics. Without going into the complexities, the argument leads to the more probable survival of families of organisms that use almost all of their energetic actions on the environment for perceptual control than of families of organisms that execute actions that do not control perception. Evolutionarily, then we arrive at "[Almost] all behaviour is the control of peception".

There is, however, a trade-off. Environments produce a wide range of PDEIs, and organisms need an equivalently wide range of ways of acting to oppose them. If the environment always stayed the same, at least in the probabilities of all its different PDEIs, then organism families could evolve to be born with mens of countering all of the more probable ones. But environments change, so families also need to change, which means that the newborn organism may need to learn how to control against at least some of the PDEIs of the environment into which they are born. The more complex the organism, the more true this is. The implication is that organisms WILL produce behaviour that is ineffective for perceptual control, and that in doing so, they give themselves the opportunity to learn to control against PDEIs that are now important but were unimportant to their ancestors.

So far, nothing here has treated of psychology at all. But it is PCT. PCT applies to all of life. My opinion is that perceptual control -- not the ability to reproduce -- is the defining property of life. Nevrtheless, when we come to HOW perceptions are controlled, and consider organisms that may have mental operations like ours, then we have to consider how PCT applies in psychology.

At this point, we arrive where Bill Powers started. Like Freud, Bill examined his own perception of what he seemed to be doing, and arrived at a hypothetical structure of levels of perceptual control. Now, if PCT were simply a psychological theory, based on assertion of some basic psychological constructs, it would have to compete with other such theories on thier own terms.

But even without the thermodynamic underpinnings, Bill's PCT was more than that. Every construct had to work as an engineering construct. For example, no control system can use data that has not yet arrived. If the data source is of a given bandwidth W, then a certain degree of future extrapolation is possible, but no further into the future than 1/2W. That's not a psychological assertion; it's just a fact of engineering life, mathematically provable. But it is very important psychologically. Likewise, it takes time for signals to propagate along nerve fibres. If you know the fibres used for some control loop, then you can calculate how much gain you can afford to give the control system at any frequency, and that limits how quickly you can deal with changing events.

Bill thought about a hierarchy of control systems, and by experiment, showed a lot of things about the properties of such system, properties not easy to deduce from first principles. But the thermodynamic and engineering underpinnings say nothing (so far as I can see at the moment) about the existence or nature of such a hierarchy, so if it is to be a psychological heory, it must be tested against data. And so Bill and others have an experimental programme which has produced many useful results.

I think the bottom-line point of all this is that PCT is not "what Bill P says it is". PCT is a DERIVABLE theory. If you posit a hierarchy, you don't need to persuade others that it ought to work. You can (in principle) simulate it and show that it can work. And then you can try to set parameters to show that it produces results similar to the results a human produces under similar circumstances.

There are lots of questions open about just how PCT works in humans (or in dogs, or trees, or bacteria). Some hypotheses about perceptual control structures are more solidly based than others. But I can see no alternative to accepting that PCT itself is a necessary foundation for all of biology and all of psychology (and all of sociology, too).

Bill said it was difficult for him to begin to understand PCT. Why should that be, if he invented it? It was because it inherently requies a kind of rigour that is not needed when one is dealing with verbal jousting. If he proposed something that wouldn't work, it simply wouldn't work. No fudging allowed. And that is indeed hard.

Sorry for the rant. But it needs to be said from time to time.

– though of course I did not consciously (or unconsciously) use
thermodynamics in working out PCT, as I’m sure you know. Your story makes
conceptual and poetic sense, even if ad hoc. It works like putting an old
picture into a nice new frame not constructed by the painter, but still
suited to the subject matter. Call it “PCT for
physicists.”
The first thought you evoked in me was one I mentioned to Phil Runkel
during my visit, which ultimately lasted until 1:30 AM last night when I
arrived back home. The thought was/is, to paraphrase a bit, that
thermodynamics is really based on PCT. What you wrote in your post, as
well as the intellectual structure to which the post refers, is a product
of the human brain working at several of its higher levels of
organization. This is the same human brain that invented mathematics,
physics, chemistry, slavery, life after death (or lack thereof), and
chocolate ice cream: i.e., everything.
Last month I visited David Goldstein and helped put on an MOL seminar at
his house. David’s wife Terry, generousness itself, gave me Walter
Isaacson’s book, Einstein, which planted this seed of thought. In
reading about the origins of quantum theory once again, and Einstein’s
problems with it, I was struck by the idea that the next revolution in
physics is not going to be about physics per se, but about the human mind
that invented physics. Physics has to go up a level.

The problem with all these old physicists (who were smarmy young
physicists then) is that they only half-realized (to be generous) that
what they were discussing was not nature or reality, but human perception
and thought. Being totally immersed, and obsessively so in Einstein’s
case, in thoughts about physical phenomena, they were unaware of the
point of view that they were using to do this thinking. They forgot that
“phenomenon” means “an observable fact or event,” and
that for an observation to take place, there must be someone to carry it
out – an Observer. An Observer requires a point of view from which to
observe, and for physicists, that point of view is called Physics, which
resides in a region of a human brain (as does that statement). In some
brains, anyhow.

So now PCT becomes a superordinate structure of thought in the human
brain that can be used to resolve conceptual issues about what is real
and unreal in physics, now a subset of PCT like other ideas I have been
told are subsets of it.

PCT starts from

its ability to replicate accurately, and would thus continue unchanged if
no disturbances (your PDEIs) ever occurred that could alter replication.
Note that simple damage is not enough to be significant in evolution. The
damage must reduce the ability to replicate accurately.

If such disturbances did occur, the replicated forms would differ from
their ancestors in unpredictable ways (since the disturbances find each
life-form in a different relationship to environmental details). Now
natural selection (or simple logic) will eliminate those forms that
cannot replicate accurately enough – they will fail to replicate, or
will produce a different form after the replication, which amounts to the
same thing. The individual original forms will disappear in either case,
leaving only the new forms in their place. Such reorganizations will
continue to occur until a life-form is produced which once again
replicates accurately.

That, it seems to me, is a completely airtight principle of evolution
which stands by itself. We could call it E. coli evolution. Note that it
is not mutation that needs explanation, but lack of change.

Now we can ask, what kinds of forms might result from inaccurate
replication that would reduce or eliminate the inaccuracy? While there
are many possibilities, and I suppose they all have been realized, there
is only one form of which I know that is maximally effective in ensuring
accurate replication: a negative feedback control system that opposes the
effects of disturbances that can reduce the accuracy or replication.
Notice how this always comes back to accuracy of replication – not
survival of the fittest. A life-form that replicates with very high
accuracy every 100 years can outlast any life-form that merely survives
with some modest likelihood of reproducing accurately every
year.

This robustness against disturbance must have taken a giant leap when one
of the products of inaccurate replication was the appearance of a
reorganizing system in succeeding generations. Now disturbances that
could cause inaccurate replication were resisted by new control systems
acquired during the lifetime of a single life-form. These control systems
could actually cause non-inherited changes of organization. That brings
us up to date (this is all discussed in the World Futures article). Where
we stand now is at the beginning of a conception of how all this works,
including reorganization and control theory, which I guess might be the
next giant step in evolution.

But even without
the thermodynamic underpinnings, Bill’s PCT was more than that. Every
construct had to work as an engineering construct. For example, no
control system can use data that has not yet arrived. If the data source
is of a given bandwidth W, then a certain degree of future extrapolation
is possible, but no further into the future than
1/2W.

I think this plays out a little differently. Negative feedback control
systems do no extrapolating into the future – in fact, the perceptions
they control are already out of date by exactly the delay you mention
when they get compared with the reference signal. They cannot be brought
under control by extrapolation into the future, which requires the taking
of derivatives. To be stable these systems must contain leaky integrators
(not differentiators) with a time constant about equal to the 1/2W figure
you cite. Their output functions, or the external feedback functions,
must be such that they are incapable of significant change within that
length of time (more precisely, that is one way of achieving stability
that seems always to work). You can say that this amounts to a
prediction, but any statement containing “you can say that” is,
while technically true (of course you can say it), substantively
false.

I think the
bottom-line point of all this is that PCT is not “what Bill P says
it is”. PCT is a DERIVABLE theory. If you posit a hierarchy, you
don’t need to persuade others that it ought to work. You can (in
principle) simulate it and show that it can work. And then you can try to

That is indeed the message I try to get across. If PCT depended only on

sign that some additional learning is needed.

Not really ad hoc, in the sense that it could be otherwise within
the framwork of “normal science” and is just a convenient
explanation. It’s a straight and necessary derivation from what are
accepted as basic principles (even if they weren’t a few centuries
ago, and may not be a few centuries hence). It’s not really new,
though. I wrote something very similar in my Editorial for the PCT
issue of the International Journal of Human-Machine Studies.


As I proposed in the World Futures articles on the origins of purpose,

did not go into the issues of replication in the rant you are pleased
to call an essay, so I’m glad you brought it up. My thoughts on this
are in the 1991 draft paper for Behavioral and Brain Sciences (nevr
completed) of which an incomplete Section 8 that deals with
replication is reproduced in
Replication .

Actually, it doesn’t mean the same thing. Consider the replicant
of a mammal. How like either parent is the newborn babe?

Again, consider the “reorgnaization” of the babe.
Doesn’t it become MORE like the parents (as they had been when it was

forms that undergo the cycle of birth, maturation, possible
replication, aging, and death. The web page goes into that.

That, it seems to me, is a completely

True. Lack of change is a thermodynamic anomaly. The web page
does, however, suggest other means of stabilization, though not
rigorously derived. If you read the preceding sections as well as

words. These words emerge in our brain and the theories are brain products.
The psychological constructs are as Peter Munz said "eloquence expressed by
different well-known men and women". These words should be pointers to
nonverbal neuronal experiences of different phenomena. Because those
nonverbal neuronal experiences are the really cause of behavior.
PCT is also a theory expressed by word. Also these words emerge in our
brain. And PCT is a brain product (Bill's). But the PCT constructs are
pointers to nonverbal neuronal experiences of different phenomena that
really cause our behavior.

I wish to say the same as you Martin, in my way.

With goodwill I agree what you say, Martin. But how is it possible for such
a theory to match observed data? How is possible for a smart man or woman to
"think out" constructs pointing to nonverbal neuronal experiences of
different phenomena that really cause our behavior?
It is not possible. The smart men and women "think out" constructs pointing
to some of all the words they express (their theories).
Let me try to express myself more specific.
Some well known men developed the S-R theory. There were lots of constructs
in the theory, they did not point to nonverbal neuronal experiences of
different phenomena that really caused our behavior. They pointed to some
words in the torrent of words held by the theory. E.g. The construct
"Secondary conditioning". The theory expressed that secondary condition may
be a secondary conditioned response, a secondary drive or a secondary
reinforcement.
They also said that secondary conditioning is an experimental fact. Some of
them exemplified a bell as an established conditioned stimulus and a light
as secondary conditioned stimulus.
Because these constructs pointed to their own words and not to the
nonverbal neuronal experiences of different phenomena that really cause our
behavior, thy used statistics.

Excuse me for all my words. I only wish to say that I don' think it is
possible for a theory that starts with assertions within the domain of
theory to match observed data.

PCT starts from foundations in thermodynamics.

I fall for Bill's explanation that he did not consciously use
thermodynamics. But the way you explained the thermodynamically effects make
me think that Bill made use of physics, chemistry and biology in a way where
there existed a one-to-one link between the phenomenon out there and the
word or the label from the phenomenon toward the word. These words are
elements in the theory of Physics (Chemistry and Biology).
