Friends,
Just a note to let you know that my father, Sigvard Forssell, died
peacefully January 15 in the evening in Liding�, a suburb of Stockholm. He
was 91 1/2. My mother, his wife of 66 years, wonderfully alert, healthy and
self-sufficient at 93 1/2, was at his side along with two of my sisters and
two grandchildren.
My father lived a rich, productive life and leaves fond memories among a
large circle of family, adopted family and friends who have benefitted from
his and my mother's caring, positive support and generosity for many
decades. Professionally, he has actually been more celebrated than ever in
the last year and a half through Volvo history books and a major feature
article in a Swedish bus industry publication. (Thanks to my brother-in-law
Christer Olsson, who has researched and written several Volvo history
books). My father suffered a brief heart stoppage and fainting spell last
May and since then his mental faculties have gradually diminished until he
lived only in a dream-world. Christine and I had an opportunity to visit
with him last September. He barely recognized us.
My mother has had time to reconcile herself to my fathers passing, though
it is sad. She made sure that the home where he was very well cared for,
was liked and was comfortable, did not make any attempts to keep him alive
longer than his frail body did by itself.
We just learned that the funeral is scheduled for February 8 at 1 pm in
Breviks kyrka on Liding�, followed by a gathering. Christine and I will be
in Stockholm the week of the funeral, returning to Los Angeles on Monday,
February 11.

Dag,
While we may be virtual friends who have never met, I was touched by your fond
recollection of your father who obviously lived a rich and valued life. How
fortunate many of us are that we were given the blessing and example of a good
father. Mine has been gone for 20 years, and not a day passes that I don't
remember him with love and gratitude. You have my sincere sympathies, Dag.

Patsy and I extend our sympathies to you at the passing of your father. It
is very nice that you honor and memorialize your father's long and fruitful
life. And, 66 years married together may be a record in my experience. We
have several relatives who made it to 50, and I think just one to 60. Our
thoughts are also with your mom. Losing her husband of so many years is akin
to losing a part of yourself.
