psuedo choice issues

Would you believe that today at school one of the teachers was telling
me about her son's annoyance with teachers who offer choices when there
is no choice. You either have to do one of two things. He was asking his
mother why they do it.
Then one of the students in my class was non compliant. He si dispraxic
and doesn't speak and has a negotiated curriculum. The curriculum is
negotiated in the core subjects but he has to attend Indonesian. It was
when he was at Indonesian that he decided he wanted out, so he left and
went into the next room where he hopped into an empty cupboard and shut
the door. The Principal was called and who gave him the choice of
joining the class or going home. He chose to join the class which by
this time had returned to my room. The principal rang up to see how he
was going and hearing that he was back working said that if he continued
to offer him a reward of coming to his office and playing a computer
type game there.
Very interesting ways of operating we teachers have. What do you think?

I think teachers and Principals, like anyone else, do the best they can
with what they know. Our job, of course, is to help them know more.

Best,
