Not sure, but maybe it's related to the use of mortal insults as terms of
endearment, like the `smile when you say that, pardner' usage of sonofabitch.

Taking the question literally, as Avery did, this looks like one way that
animals establish friendship. "I could hurt you, but see, I'm not" or "what
we are now doing would be combat except that we both know it is not." Look
at Gregory Bateson's essay on play.
