Same old song

Happy Friday the 13th!

Rick Marken (951012.2300) --

Very nice reiteration of all the usual claims. But Rick, assertion is not
argumentation.

[From Rick Marken (951013.0830)]

Very nice reiteration of all the usual claims.

Thank you.

But Rick, assertion is not argumentation.

And I am done arguing. You have been on the net for over a year
now, I think, and your opinion about the value of conventional
research has not changed a bit -- and neither has mine. You have
presented evidence for your side; I have presented evidence for
mine. You have not been persuaded by my evidence; I have not been
persuaded by yours. I think it's safe to say that futher argument
is fruitless.

I came to my conclusions about the value of conventional research
all on my own -- after a 10+ year career as a conventional behavioral
researcher with PhD, a textbook and tenure. I think it's highly
unlikely that there is any argument that can bring me back to my
pre-PCT view of behavioral research. You have not come to the same
conclusion as me about the value of conventional research. I think
it is clear from our experience over the last year that there is little
chance that I can find arguments that will change your conclusion
about the value of conventional research. I' afraid you, too, will have to
change your conclusions about conventional research on your own (like
I did) _if you are ever willing to_; I certainly can't change them for you.

I think your attempts to defend the value of conventional research have
produced some very useful results -- perhaps the most dramatic being
your own discovery that one of the basic facts of conventional EAB
research -- the effect of reinforcement schedule on response rate --
is an artifact. But your (Quixotic, I think) interest in accounting for
the results of conventional research in terms of PCT has, thus far,
produced plenty of nothing; in particular, no PCT research.

So go ahead and argue, if you like. But I already concede; at least, I
concede that I am never going to persuade you to stop wasting your
time on conventional research and to start over with PCT. It's up to
you. We've given you the evidence; now you have to decide what's most
important to you.

Best

Rick
