Spontefacting away

[From Rick Marken (960204.1500)]

Bruce Abbott (960204.1720 EST) --

Me:

What behavioral phenomenon does perceptual spontefaction theory
explain?

Bruce:

Hold on now -- you haven't answered MY question yet! It's still your turn.

Do you mean this question:

The question I am really trying to get at here is, can I learn anything
from these observations about the internal reference standard that
presumably guided this fairly consistent production?

If so, I thought I answered it. The person probably has a reference
perceiving the pattern "Bruce". But it might be that the reference
was not for the visual pattern but for the word "Bruce", printed or in
script or in another familiar symbol system. The observations you describe
provide a strong hint about what perception is being spontefacted; but
you still need to do some serious Testing if use want to model what is
going on here (as you presumably do if you want to posit "reference
standards").

Now can you answer my question? It's really very simple.

Thanks

Also, in reply to:

Do EABers (or any other psychologists) act as though they are aware
of the possibility that organisms may be spontefacting perceptual
representations of variables in the environment?

You said:

the problem is that I am not particularly well-informed as to how "EABers
and other psychologists" (a large domain) are "acting."

Let me try to make this simpler still.

Do you know of any EABer (or conventional psychologist) who is acting
(by testing for spontefaction) as though he or she is aware of the
possibility that organisms may be spontefacting perceptual representations
of variables in the environment?

Best
