My copy of Chase's book, published by Harcourt, Brace and
Company, still has the dust cover (rather tattered, I'm afraid).
Not bad for a book published in 1938 (a year after I was born).
The opening paragraph from the acknowledgement follows:
"THIS book is an experiment. Is it possible to explain
words with words? Can some of the reasons why it is
so difficult for us to communicate with one another by
means of language be set forth in that same faulty me-
dium? It is for the reader to judge."
"Purpose," I think you will find, does not adhere to anyone
or anything. It is an attribute, conferred by one person upon
another or upon a thing, or even upon one's self, but it is not
inherent, intrinsic, or otherwise built into anything or anyone.
Anyway, that's my opinion (or should I say "view," "belief,"
"perspective," or perhaps "reference"?).
