Peter Cariani's mention of theoretical physicists blathering
about God and the Big Bang reminds me that some on this net would
probably enjoy Mary Midgely's Science As Salvation (Routledge,
1992, on this very subject. She slugs away at a lot of other
people too, like B.F. Skinner. And if that sounds fun, also see
her Evolution and Religion (Routledge, 1985), where her targets
are Monod, Dawkins, etc.
One of Midgely's aims is to make sense of purpose. She wrote a
friendly and interested reply to a letter from Bill about PCT,
and we shall see if anything comes of this.
