No, I did not miss the message as in reviewing same, I pretty much
remember the remainder of the message but found that portion only vaguely
familiar -- I specifically remembered the "classical greek" comment.
I suppose that I will have to stand in disagreement with Bill on this
one though I don't disagree with his explaination of the problem. The
differing conclusion probably stems from my perception that a 'good'
control system engineer DOES recognize that the common application of the
term 'control' even by most engineers is wrong.
Martin's reference to your remark concerning my 'care' in reading your
posting at least did cause me to think a little about perceptions
possibly related to our exchanges.
From my point of view, it did not matter what word you picked or
suggested since my position is that the term 'control' perfectly suits
the need.
I perceive that you (quite naturally -- now that I think about it)
thought that my seizing upon 'govern' from your message implied that I
assumed that 'govern' was you choice and that I was 'attacking' that
choice. So to be sure that there is no misunderstanding -- I was not the
least concerned about what might have been the replacement suggestion,
what I was asserting is that I do not feel that a change in term is
needed.
As to seriousness, I have not the slightest doubt that Bill P. is
serious about the matter. I also respect that he has been 'fighting'
with the inappropriate baggage of the term for over an order of magnitude
longer time than I have even recognized the term's application to
behaviour.
