Windows XP

Has anyone had any success running Bill's Demo's under Win XP? If so can
you share the secret :-). I posted this about a week ago without any
replies. I figured I would give it one more try.

Thanks Bjorn. I downloaded mine from the CSGnet web site and it loaded but
had garbage characters in the slots on the screen, in the arm demo, where
the parameters should have been and the model did not run. I am going to
try another download. If that fails I will be getting a CSGnet CD from Dag
shortly

I echo Marc Abrams' query and welcome Bjorn's comment. The question is
whether anything special is needed to make my demo programs run under
Windows XP. Marc has all sorts of problems with strange characters
(although we seem to be able to handle strange characters on CSGnet without
too much trouble).

Best,

Bill P.

This has been a tough week for me. I have not been able to download the
files again from the web-site. ( I'll do it tonight )

The strange thing about the last download was that _all_ the files seemed
to be corrupted. _none_ of the demo's worked.

I'll report back with any news.

No luck. I down loaded all the demos and none worked. I think maybe the
files are corrupted at the site or in transmission.

Bjorn, can you try to download the Arm demo or demo1 or 2 and see if they work?

Thanks.

I downloaded all Bill's files and they functioned well, also Arm demo, demo1
and demo2.

I got a message before downloading:
"Antivirus Download Monitor Initializing Download.
FTP host used: ftpez.ca.com
Errors were encountered during update, please see log"

check?

My Norton's Anti-Virus program doesn't see any viruses, before or after
unpacking Demo1.

Let's review the downloading process. I'm running this computer under
Windows ME.

1. Call up your browser and access

home.earthlink.net/~powers_w

2. Find and click once on the blue-underlined line that says "Demo1"

3. A window opens and says that the file is being downloaded into a viewer
(this may be in Windows ME only -- it doesn't work this way in W98) (Or
maybe this is Norton Anti Virus sticking its nose in).

4. Anyhow, download the file into an empty directory (I used "Temp1"). The
file that appears there is called "1stdemo.exe." If you now have
1stdemo.exe alone in a folder or directory, this much has worked properly.
To check for viruses, right-click on the file name and you should see
something about your virus checker in the little window. Do it to the
original file, and again after expanding the file (below). My download
tested clean both ways.

5. Get out of Netscape and hang up. Use My Computer or whatever you use to
bring up the directory with the above file in it.

6. Double click on the file to expand it into its component files. Click on
the DOS window's X to close it, if you end up with a list of files in white
letters on a black window. There should now be a list of files in the
temporary directory,.

The following works with W-98, W-ME and W-2000. Don't know about XP. If you
see something about "virtual machine" answer Yes.

7. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Right-click on demo1.exe, and left-click on Create
Shortcut. A "Shortcut to demo1.exe" will appear at the end of the list of
files. Drag it onto the desktop and close the window it came from. Do not
try to run the program directly from Demo1.exe. This will generally be true
of DOS programs.

8. THIS IS IMPORTANT, TOO. Right-click on the shortcut icon, then
left-click on "properties." Left-lick on the tab "Program." Left-click in
the box "Close on exit" or make sure there is a check mark already in it.
Left-click on the tab "Screen." Left-click on "Full Screen". At the bottom,
click on "OK". The window will close.

9. Start the program by left-clicking on the shortcut icon. I get normal
operation of Demo 1 out of this.

10. Once checked out, the shortcut icon can be renamed and stored somewhere
more convenient than the desktop. You will probably want to move the
original compressed file and the expanded files to a folder with a more
meaningful name. Etc.

I have no knowledge of how these procedures look under W-XP.Try them and
let us all know about differences or failures. I have checked everything I
can with the Demo 1 program, and it runs fine, at the right speed, on my
1.6 GHz Dell 4300 computer.

Best,

Bill P.

Hmmm!. The last time I tried to downloaded the files some of them wound up
on my desktop, not in the designated folder. When I went to delete them
they "deleted" to that folder. I have both a software firewall, router, and
on-line anti-virus software that checks all stuff going out and coming in.
I use Eudora and Norton's on-line anti-virus service, which normally alerts
me to any virus and deletes the file. I received no message upon
downloading Bills files. Maybe the files at the site have viruses. Has
anyone checked? How can you check?
