It's time to let me know if you plan to attend this year's conference
and/or pre-conference MOL workshop. So far very few have indicated they
intentions to attend. Not having a good feel for numbers makes it
difficult to do proper planning.
Single apartments and double suites cannot be guaranteed, so why not use
your credit card and book now. You can always get a refund later.

THE CONFERENCE
The Control Systems Group (CSG) has met annually since 1985 to discuss
theoretical and practical applications of PERCEPTUAL CONTROL THEORY
(PCT) in the behavioral, social, and life sciences. This is a small and
informal meeting, open to anyone interested in PCT who wants to present
work or ideas, or who simply wants to listen and learn.
The 1999 CSG conference will begin Wednesday evening, July 21, and end
Sunday morning, July 25. It is being held at the University of British
Columbia (UBC). The first meeting will be Wednesday evening. At that
time we find out who wants to talk about what, and set up a schedule
bunching more or less connected topics together. There is usually time
for a talk that evening. The next meetings are mornings and evenings,
with afternoons free. The afternoons are used by some for recreation,
while others get and give tutorials, read, etc. We ask people who want
to present material to bring relevant papers that can be read in advance
of their talks, so that presentations are discussions rather than
lectures.
On Saturday evening we have a buffet/banquet. The conference closes
Sunday morning, July 25 with people getting together for breakfast and
an informal meeting.
THE PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP - "METHOD OF LEVELS" (MOL)
The MOL workshop will be lead by William T. Powers, the originator of
Perceptual Control Theory. It will be of interest to those in the
helping professions, and others, who want explore ways to help people
"go up a level." The Method of Levels is not about advising,
suggesting, judging, or imposing one's attitude on others. In a sense,
it is not really a "method" or technique as all, but a flexible and
evolving way for people to achieve insight into their own behavior.
The MOL workshop will begin on Sunday evening, July 18 and end on
Wednesday, July 21 after a morning session. Sunday evening will be
spent on introductions and finalizing details of the schedule, with time
for discussion. Monday morning will begin with an introduction to
Perceptual Control Theory and its application to the helping
professions. Exploration of the Method of Levels will continue with
sessions on Monday evening, Tuesday morning and evening, and Wednesday
morning. Afternoons will be free.
SETTING
UBC campus is only a few kilometers from the airport and downtown
Vancouver. It is surrounded by forested parkland and miles of beaches.

CSG CONFERENCE FEES
Conference fees will include coffee breaks, a Saturday night
buffet/banquet, and the year 2000 membership in CSG. You will pay for
your accommodation and meals separately.

Waiver of CSG Conference Fees

"METHOD OF LEVELS" WORKSHOP FEES

Late registration (after June 1, 1999) $120 USD $180 CAD
One day fees $50 USD $75 CAD
MEALS
Conference and workshop attendees are responsible for their own meals.
A variety of restaurants and cafeterias are available on campus. Coffee
breaks and the Saturday buffet/banquet (for conference attendees) are
covered by the fees.
NO SMOKING
Smoking is not permitted in any building on campus. This includes
sleeping rooms.
ACCOMMODATION
Conference and workshop attendees are responsible for reserving their
own accommodation in the Walter Gage Residence on the UBC campus. Think
of it as booking a hotel suite. To book, phone the Reservations Office,
UBC Conference Centre with your VISA or MasterCard number.
When reserving your accommodation, indicate you are with the Control
Systems Group as a limited block of accommodation has been set aside for
the Control Systems Group.
If you are planning to reserve accommodation with a private bathroom,
book as soon as possible.
Consider booking the BASIC accommodation. It is very reasonably priced,
does not require a deposit, and has the best availability. It can be
arranged to group those of the same sex, conference, family etc. into
the same six-bedroom apartment.

Accommodation Payment Details:
1. Full payment is due at check-in by cash, traveler's checks, VISA, or
MasterCard (no personal checks).
2. Private washroom accommodation must be guaranteed by credit card for
the equivalent of one night's accommodation.
3. A one-night cancellation charge applies if cancellation is not
received 48 hours prior to check-in date.
4. Refunds of deposits will be subject to a $15.00 CAD administration
charge.
(ADD 15% TAX TO THE FOLLOWING RATES)
1. BASIC - single lockable bedrooms in a complex of 6 - with shared
living area, bath, and kitchenette ($35 CAN - approx. $24 USD per
night).
2. SINGLE APARTMENTS - with single bed, private shower, sitting area,
and kitchenette ($69 CAN - approx. $46 USD per night).
3. DOUBLE SUITE - ($105 CAD - approx. $70 USD per night) with double
bed, equipped kitchen, and living room.
4. COURT SUITE - with 2 twin beds and 1 double bed in separate rooms,
living area, and kitchenette ($121 CAN - approx. $80 USD for two people
- add $10 CAD per night for third person).
