2005 CSG Conference and Pre-conference MOL Workshop

[From Bruce Abbott (2005.03.30.0615 EST]

Unless the listserv has filtered it out, a PDF file giving details about
the 2005 CSG conference and pre-conference MOL workshop should be attached.
This includes a registration form for those planning to attend. I have also
made arrangements to have the same information posted to the new CSG
website at http://www.perceptualcontroltheory.org/

Hi, Bruce --

Well done. It looks quite experienced and professional. Could have fooled me.

I've put your PDF version of the announcement and registration form up at
the CSG site with a pointer to it from the Annual Meeting details page:

The PDF indicates that a cheque in US$ is required. For non-US people that could be a problem. Most US banks charge an exorbitant amount for cashing cheques from a non-US bank written in US$. I intend to send a money order, which is a bit of a pain, but no real difficulty. But I have the impression that Europeans often use bank transfers. Is that anothe option?

That would be a question for our Treasurer, Rick Marken, to answer, as he's handling the monetary transactions for us.

Rick, what say you?

I say register ASAP. Money order is fine. I think a bank transfer could be
arranged, too. Those who want to do a back transfer should get in touch with
me by personal e-mail and I'll work it out with them and the bank.

Best

Bill Powers informs me that I didn't reply to the question I was asked,
which was about whether I could avoid large fees for accepting foreign money
as payment for the conference. The answer to that question is "I doubt it
but I'll check". I think the best policy is that, if you are in some country
outside the US, you should convert your conference payment to dollars US
(which are practically valueless anyway so you'll win big time from the
exchange rate) and send that.

Thanks

Rick

Since I asked the question, I think I should say that you did answer it as asked. I asked it because I knew that if I write a cheque in US$ on my US Dollar account at the Royal Bank of Canada and send that (no foreign exchange involved on either end), you would be charged a large fee for cashing the cheque.

I also know that when I deal with some European institutions, they demand a bank transfer, so I guessed that maybe some European participants (if there are any) might prefer that mode of sending money.

I usually send US$ to US companies or individuals by way of an International Money Order, which I buy at the bank using my US$ account to avoid the foreign exchange.

I also had in the back of my mind that since the meeting is in Canada, and the host location will be paid in Canadian dollars, you might prefer Canadian participants to keep the money in Canada, perhaps remitting it to Crieff Hills in part payment of the rental, or something like that. That would avoid two foreign exchange charges, making the meeting marginally cheaper for CSG.

So, unless the last paragraph tweaks some interest, I'll send a money order.
