Did anyone catch the report on MSNBC (perhaps some weekend edition?) which
dealt with a novel approach being used by a man (I guess a psychologist) who
was helping a family deal with a boy diagnosed with an Attention Deficit
Disorder (perhaps they called it ODD?)?
This "off the wall" practitioner actually encouraged the parents to let the
child do what he wants (instead of trying to control him and drug him into
docility and obedience), within the parameters of health and safety. The
results were amazing. All the antagonistic behavior stopped. Mom was asked
if she isn't letting her kid rule the roost. She said, well I am letting him
do what he wants as much as I can. But, doing so is also getting me what I
and my husband want. And, without all the previous conflict! It is working
for all of us. A better way.
It is this type of application of PCT, and the theory behind it, that I think
our CSG should be crowing about in a unified voice of supportive and e
xplanative brilliance. Perhaps it would provide scientific evidence that we
and our group can provide greater value to our fellow man. Who in the CSG
has references against that?
Kenneth,
I was really pleased by your email. I've long felt frustrated by the degree
to which psychology stumbles along without the help of PCT while there are
many examples of people applying the underlying theory while couching it in
a different set of terms. As we continually experience it on CSGnet,
language is a very sloppy medium of exchange. Despite all that, we should
be talking of ways to have a greater impact, not collapsing. I'm glad
you're willing to put a bit of time into it.
