Thanks for the acknowledgment, and my apologies for the temerity. I do
take a lot of interpersonal risks, but I really had intended at least to
try to soften the temerity by acknowledging it in my letter, and was
considerably embarrassed to realize later that, in my usual rush, that
was one of two points I had omitted. The other omission only enhanced
the presumptuousness, since I felt that some of Carr's message could
easily be insulting by implication; and I wanted to acknowledge that,
never having been tempted by smoking myself (having smoking parents may
be the best deterrent!), I would not have given much credence to the
specific feelings he says are commonly alleviated by smoking (I would
personally have been more inclined to emphasize feelings of deprivation
per se in giving up something valued). So: thanks additionally for
your generosity of spirit in accepting this.
