cgsnet and personal attacks

(From Ray Bennett 2001.09.28

I have been a lurker for some time. I was
amazed at how things went so well for a time; people discussing ideas
and theory applications, and then in came a bell ringing…button pushing
… comment. Things then deteriorated somewhat.

I have found much of what has been argued,
thought provoking and interesting. I am happy with Bill’s notion that words
don’t hurt people unless they let them. However, I’d prefer it if this
was recognised and when the words have hurt because you have wanted them
to, just say so. Otherwise as Bill P. has suggested don’t reveal
anything. I find the argument processes used by the main talkers on
CSGnet worth the read. I do not mix with many people who are willing to
discuss their thinking or are as articulate as you who are talking on the
CSGnet. So for me it is refreshing.

I have never met any of you. I don’t know
that Rick is a Jew or whether William is whatever. These things are irrelevant
and like Bill P. I would prefer if they weren’t raised. It is obvious that
raising them also rings the bells or pushes the buttons of some of you.
Re-organise, and keep talking and arguing and working at clarifying ideas
and processes that are related to Perceptual Control Theory.

I don’t know if meeting people is what does
it, but from what I have read from you all, all of you are people who I
would like to meet and whose writings I enjoy reading. And when I don’t
enjoy the topic I just push the delete button. I don’t however stop looking
to see what topics are being discussed. So keep on writing. I believe there
are a lot more like me lurking and liking and choosing… controlling
to learn PCT and its applications. Thank you for your help.

I have been a lurker for some time.

I "lurked" for several years before I decided to get into the thick of things.

Obviously there is more to the issue concerning words hurting than merely
whether they do or they don't. I hope in the future that this gets sorted out
better. For now I guess what I'd say is that an "informed adult" can make a
choice about whether or not to allow words to hurt. I'm not sure whether I
fall short in regard to the being "informed" or the being "adult" part, but I
still myself to some extent react to "words." I think we all do.

I wonder, do you "lurk" by accessing the webb page archives, or are you a
subscriber to the net?

Best
