Control Theory

( Gavin
Ritz 2011.02.03.15.30NZT)

I was really taken aback last night reading
an old classic by John R Pierce of Communication Theory fame.

On page 85 of Man’s World of Sound (1958
version Doubleday Publications) he clearly shows how a control system will work
in the nervous system, brain (with reference signal and comparator) with
respect to speech and sound, now this is hardly a theory he puts forward, but
it is the first time I have seen this diagrammatic concept outside PCT.

Pierce also goes on to say that handling of objects is also done in humans
via this feedback system.

Was this type of thinking vogue before and
after the war, because he also makes a diagrammatic reference to gun control?

This is rather bold statements Pierce
makes here as his book (circa 1958) is about language, speech and thought which
is an aspect of psychology, there is also references to lots of research of psychophysics
(never heard of it before).

He makes no mention of a “controlled
variable” which in my opinion is one of the real coups of PCT. But
discusses in details control of the vocal cords etc.

Thanks

Hi Rick,

I hope you have a strong protection program. If not maybe it could help this
explanation which I got through fast Google search...

These people are crooks. I was also hit. When I tried to download a book,
what I got instead were three infected files :

C:\Documents and Settings\ďż˝\Local Settings\Temp\Fwk.exe ďż˝> Gen:Variant.Kazy.9776
ďż˝> c:\windows\tasks\{62c40aa6-4406-467a-a5a5-dfdf1b559b7a}.job
C:\DOCUME~1\ďż˝\LOCALS~1\Temp\Fwl.exe ďż˝> Gen:Variant.Kazy.9776
ďż˝> Process Fwl.exe (1332)
C:\DOCUME~1\ďż˝\LOCALS~1\Temp\Fwm.exe ďż˝> Gen:Variant.Kazy.9776
ďż˝> Process Fwm.exe (184)

BitDefender QuickScan ( http://quickscan.bitdefender.com/ ) & Malwarebytes (
http://www.malwarebytes.org/ ), both free, saved the day.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING from worid-of-books.com. Period.

Maybe there is more about this infection. I have Avira protection program
and it didn't let me open the homepage. So I couldn't download anything :))

Hope everything will be all right.

Best,

Boris

I am such a moron. I ran the damn .exe file. I immediately turned off
the computer when I saw Richard's note and check my virus scan
software after it re-booted. Things _seem_ to be OK but it's pretty
embarrassing. I can't believe I fell for it; I'm usually so careful.
Guess I just assumed that anything from Bruce Abbott had to be
legit;-) Next thing you know I'll be sending money to the deposed
prince of Nigeria or whoever it is who keeps calling me "beloved".

Well, I definitely installed some viral software when I ran the .exe
file (like a moron). Thanks for these suggested sites but I went there
and was afraid they might be bad boys too. I have McAfee and it didn't
protect me from this virus at all (this is my fist virus even so at
least now I know they do really exist). I've taken my machine to a
systems shop to clean it but they might just rip me off too. Ah well,
makes up for all the time I've saved using computers (instead of
pencil and paper).

Best

Thanks Gavin. But I can’t quite read it; print is too small. But it looks pretty good. Any possibility that you could magnify it a bit (without blurring, as happens when I magnify the image above).

Hi Rick
Give me your private email, as the doc is 5megs, it gets spat back at me when I attach it so i squeezed it down.
What’s also interesting he says further in the book some research has been done showing that there is a feedback control system in operation between the cortex and the cochlea, but does not mention who did it.
