Me: In your opinion what was the worst mistake you made in regard to CSG?

[From Rick Marken (2002.09.28.1900)]

as I reflect on this I think that unquestionably the worst mistake
I've made in the context of CSGNet (I think that's what you mean) was
assuming that Tom Bourbon (who was not on CSGNet at the time) would be
completely in agreement with Bill Powers and I regarding the issues
discussed in the now infamous "coercion debate". I don't think I've ever
been more mistaken about anything in my life. And it's still costing me.

I think as a measure of sanity there ought to be some sort of time limit
regarding blame assigned on the basis of stuff that happened "long ago and far
away."

best

I don't understand what you mean by this. I'll just say that I was certainly not
blaming anyone for anything. I just made the mistake of assuming that everything
Bill and I were saying was consistent with what Tom thought. If I had had any
idea that Tom (who I considered a friend and colleague) not only took exception
with what we were saying but was taking it as a deep personal affront as well (as
seems to be the case) I might have taken another approach or just stayed out of
the whole thing.

Rick,

When I said there ought to be some sort of statue of limitations on blame, what
I had in mind was the "I Hate Rick Club" contingent ought to consider whether
they think carrying on a vendetta forever is really the best poliicy. Sorry
what I said wasn't clear. Maybe I need to attend to "honing" my communications.
<g> I will attempt to say what I originally intended again-- Maybe we all
ought to let you off the hook for stuff that happened long ago and far away.

There's other stuff that could be said, but maybe its best to leave it at that
be for the time being,

Bill Williams

No problem. I appreciate it very much, Bill. Thanks.

I, of course, agree that it would be nice if there were a statue of limitations on
the hate Rick thing too. It would certainly make my participation in CSG and
CSGNet a lot more pleasant.

Best regards
