Phil (and anyone else). I am coming in on United 174 at 4:30 pm
on the same day. I don't know Logan but I bet they have Rental
Car places in the terminal (after the baggage claim).

They do. However, they have booths only in Terminal A. In the other terminals, there's only a phone, no rental car booth:

United comes in to Terminal C: http://www.massport.com/logan/insid_termi_c.html

At http://www.massport.com/logan/airli.html is a list of other airlines showing which terminal each comes in to.

So if you
(and anyone else coming in around that time) want to share a cab,
why don't we meet at the Avis booth (assuming there is one) at
around 5:00 pm or so?

There are terminals A, B, C, D, and E, so this will work for people coming in on the same airline or otherwise to the same terminal (at roughly the same time). http://www.massport.com/logan/pic/c_loganmap1.gif

A suggested alternative, FWIW: in the Baggage Claim area, there's an office where you go to ask about lost or damaged baggage. I usually stand near that as a meeting place. Maybe it's only because lost people and lost baggage seem to go together somehow. (If you ask a security guard and they tell you they've moved it or something, a backup is to stand next to the down escalator.)

OK. If anyone is coming in on United at around 4:30, I'll share
a cab with them if they meet me at the Avis phone around 5:00.
If I don't hear from anyone, I'll take the T.

Best
