CSGconference2006 DVDs & Videos

[From Lloyd Klinedinst (2006.08.07.1625)]

Greetings, CSGers,

I regret not noticing the CSGnet posts earlier. Here’s my information, relating some comments to Kenny Kitzke’s questions to me in an individual email:

  1. Out of courtesy, if not law, we should get permission from SCNU for copying their produced DVDs. Today, I just received that permission from Ms. Fan and Mr. Zhang.

I add a question: May we presume that the video I took of scholars and students is also OK? (As I think of it though, westerners are the ones worried about China not observing its copyrights and patents; this would be a fine reversal of circumstances, not unlike our wearing suits to the conference and their sporting casual dress.)

  1. CSG Members should realize that the China DVDs do not include our opening CSG day or our exciting PCT Workshop with presentations and involvement of many of the Chinese students.

I have some 11 hours of video covering the Monday of our planning meeting, the plenary sessions on Tuesday, and our breakout sessions on Wednesday, not to mention an hour video of our two postconference tour days (including footage of Bill playing ‘country and eastern’’), and a little over 30’ audio interview in which Bill describes to Gary Cziko some background and history of PCT’s origins.

In one of my posts, I alluded to your taping (was it digital?) of not only our CSG meetings not on the China DVD’s but that you also taped all the Joint, formal meetings. Can you clarify what you have taped, are you giving it to Dag for editing, will it be available in VHS, DVD or both, and when might it be available?

My taping is on miniDV cassettes; yes, they are digital. In the past, I transferred this data to Dag in a form we mutually agreed on and from there he has prepared it for CSG archives and distribution.

Have you played China DVD 1 and 2? DVD 2 seems to be a problem for me. After a lot of clicking, it played once but the last time I tried to watch it, I was unable toIs there anything on them that is not on your tape? If they have their Complexity Science Workshop on their DVD, I assume it is in Chinese and would not be of much value to anyone in CSG?

I can play both DVDs on my Mac PowerBook that I bought to China. DVD2 won’t load on my Mac desktop computer. I think the issue is quality and speed of burning the DVDs, a problem whether here or in China, especially if the DVDs were burned on copier machines. So then it is a matter of the quality of one’s DVD hardware (I think it’s because my Mac PowerBook is newer than my desktop that it plays both DVDs and the desktop only plays DVD1, ejecting DVD2 as blank or unreadable.)

By the way, here’s the file structure on DVD1; for each ‘track’ there is are three files; there is an extra set of three, I imagine for the menu track. DVD2 has one less set.

(There are 7 conference tracks on DVD1; 6 on DVD2.)
