[From Rick Marken (01.12.24.0850)]
Bill Powers suggested to me that it might be interesting to know who is
actually still active on CSGNet (as listener or participant). I think it
would, indeed, be interesting and, therefore, I am recommending to Gary
Cziko, who has contact with the listserve masters, that everyone
currently listed as a CSGNet subscriber be dropped from the list before
Jan 1, 2002 (or about then). Then all those who want to be on CSGNet can
resubscribe as soon as a message is posted to CSGNet saying that it's
time to do so.
Gary Cziko will have to handle this. Do you want to do it Gary? Do you
think it's a reasonable idea?
Best

Small glitch here -- if everyone has been dropped from the list, how are
they going to get the message saying it's OK to subscribe, now?
I suggest posting the detailed instructions for subscribing several times
before Jan, 2, and then simply wiping the list clean. Lots of cautions
about SAVE THIS CSGnet POST and so on.
There may be a listserv function to simply respond to an email to stay on
the list. If no response within two weeks or so, anyone not responding would
be dropped.
We’ll see what Gary says. Sounds like a good “ring out the old, ring in
the new” reorganization.

OK. We have to wait to see if Gary Cziko buys in because he's the only
one who has any _control_ over the list of listserve subscribers.

You could just ask - in a general message - if a person wants to remains on
the list. If a person subscribes before being purged from the list then
he/she will receive an "automatic" message noting that he/she is already on
the list so the purging must be done before subscribing. It will only work
(as I undersatnd it) if a message is sent out saying that "all curent membes
will be purged from the list and will have to subscribe anew" along will
instructions as to how to subscribe.

Chuck Tucker
Hello,
I may not be aware of the reasons for doing this, so I wonder why this is a
good idea to get people to re-subscribe. No other list I've been a member
has done this. Is it a test to actually see who is still controlling their
memberships to the list, and thus loose those who may have at one time been
controlling for their membership but are not now controlling for the
membership? Or is a computer functioning issue?
Curious,
Rohan.

I'm sorry to have taken so long to respond to this. I had been using
At Home for my CSGnet mailings. A couple of weeks ago they
apparently went out of business, and I haven't been able to get my
CSGnet mail back until today (after having dealt with AT&T, At Home,
Excite and Incite--and I still don't know who my ISP for this email
account is!).
I think it would be a good idea to eliminate dead and/or inactive
email addresses from CSGnet, but I would like to try something first
before dumping everyone from the list.
There is a listserv function that is designed to drop addresses from
the list to which mail is not successfully forwarded. I have never
been able to get this to work as advertised, but the last time I
tried was probably well over a year ago. I'd like to give this a try
first to see if I can get it to work and see who is left after bad
addresses are removed.
Also, it used to be possible for any subscriber to check the list of
addresses using the rev command. They changed this a while back due
to spam concerns so that only listowners can get the list. While I
am the principal listowner, Bill, Rick, and Dag are also listowners
and can do anything I can do (except be bothered by all the returned
messages).

That sounds like the best idea. I think we should definitely wait until you
can get that command to work, even if we have to wait until 2003. The
whole point of doing the unsubscribe/subscribe thing now was so that it
could be done while there is no traffic on CSGNet. But I plan to post
something about applied PCT soon and that will probably end the lull.
So Happy New Year to all... 'til then;-)
