DVD's

From [Marc Abrams (2006.08.07.1342)]

Rick, I got the DVD’s today. What do you want me to do with them?

They are .AVI files and I can convert them into any number of formats. MPEG4 is probably the most popular which would also allow the playback on an IPOD or other portable device.

The conversions are not complicated but they do take a long period of time. You can figure just about a one-one ratio. That is, if you have 7 chapters of 40 minutes each than the conversion will take about 280 minutes. Making copies will take a very small fraction of time.

Regards,

Marc

Can you convert them to a format that would play on a DVD player? That's the format I would want, with a nice menu so that I could select the talk I want to see (like on a movie DVD). If not, MPEG4 would be fine.

OK, let me play a little and I’ll get back to you tomorrow.

<Rick, I got the DVD’s today. What do you want me to do with them?>

Good news! Today I received a reply from Ms. Fan and Mr. Xhang. They gave us permission to copy and reformat their Conference DVDs. We can even sell them for CSG purposes. They had given out all they had produced.

Here are the requests I had received:

2006 CSG Conference Requests

Name DVDs Proceedings

Richard Kennaway 1 1
Martin Taylor 1
Rich Pfau 1 1
Phil Runkel 1
Jim Dundon 1
Dick Robertson 1
Shelley Brierley 5-10 (for IIACT)

Rick, I would recommend that Marc make 20 reformatted DVDs. Can you handle any money for Marc and arrange for distribution and the cost for mailing them? I do not have mailing addresses but perhaps you or Dag do.

SCNU has no additional Proceedings. We also have permission to copy that. I also leave that to you to take to Kinko’s if you want to honor the three requests received and decide whether to do that at CSG expense or charge the recipients. Obviously, you could send the DVDs and the Proceedings in one package. I would send a DVD to Phil even if he did not request one. I think he would enjoy the testimonials to Bill.

I have not yet heard from Lloyd about the videos he made. I am not sure if there is anything on the China DVDs that are not on his. In fact, his would have our CSG sessions from Day 1 and Day 3 that (to my knowledge) are NOT on the China DVD’s (unless Lloyd allowed them to add his video to the China DVDs).

It seems like Marc ought to try to convert the DVD’s and report to you what is on them before burning a bunch of copies. Given my list, and whatever else comes up from Shelley or others (including input from Lloyd and Dag about that video) hopefully a final instruction to Marc from you will settle the matter.

CSG can certainly handle the costs of the DVDs and the mailing. I don't have all the addresses but I'm sure I can get them so I can mail them out if Marc sends them to me.

OK. I'll make copies of the Proceedings, too.

OK. Let's play it incrementally. I'll see what Marc can do with the DVDs from China. I'll also see what Lloyd has as far as DVDs of the meetings. Lloyd's might be the one's to distribute.

Lloyd, are you there?? What's the status of the videos you took of the meeting?

From [Marc Abrams (2006.08.08.1001)]

The initial results are not encouraging. I converted all the files to .AVI which is the video standard for PC use and the quality of the video was very poor and the audio when in English not very clear.

I am going to convert them to WMV format which is for the Windows media player and see if things don’t come out a bit better.

For those who attended I’m sure these DVD;s would make nice keep sakes. I’m not so sure if there is any pedagogical value here unless you speak Mandarin.

In any event, I will make the conversion in both AVI and WMV formats and I will send the masters back to Rick. I do not have the time to make and send out copies.

Dag never responded to my e-mail so I will let Rick decide how he wants to distribute them. The AVI files are of less quality but much smaller file size. Sometimes it matters and sometimes it doesn’t. I’ll let you know later or tomorrow what the case is here.

Sorry I couldn’t be more upbeat at this time.

BTW, there are 13 "chapters with each one running about 40 minutes. Rick, if you have a written Proceedings of the Video I could add titles for you but right now I have no clue how to title each of the chapters.

Regards,

Marc

Thanks for trying.

I think Lloyd's video of the conference should be what is distributed as the record of the CSG Conference at SCNU.

Lloyd, do you have any idea when the videos will be delivered to Dag for editing and copying? Once the CDs are completed I'm sure Dag will be happy to distribute them to everyone in CSG who wants one (which, I presume, will be everyone in CSG and IAACT. CSG will certainly reimburse for the cost of the CDs.

There is no difference in the results of the formats.

I did not watch everything but I found it strange that all the English speakers were translated into Chinese and the Chinese speakers were not translated into English.

I will send the avi disks out to you on Wed.

Marc
