It was very nice to speak with you this morning and I am glad to know you as
a friend of Bill's. He had surgery this morning and it went very well. His
foot was removed but it was below the knee so he will have that joint and
can be fitted with a more simple prosthesis. He is doing remarkable well.
His vision is good and has not been affected by his illness. He will be out
of ICU possible as early as tomorrow and will remain in the hospital for a
yet undetermined stay, but in the area of 2 weeks. He is quite impressed
with the quality and consistency of his care at the hospital so this may
help with overcoming future resistance to seeking care. We are planning how
to help him when he comes out as we expect there will be a significant
transition for him. He lives 1.5 blocks from campus but that may be quite a
journey at first. In any event he is now doing much better. I do not think
he would have survived another 24-48 hours without treatment. That's about
all for now. I will keep you posted and get you a phone number to call him
when they move him to a room.
Warmest regards
Jim Sturgeon
