Here’s the original, “incomprehensible” paper from JCM about negative feedback and control theory. Note his discussion of impossible roots. Also note the distinction he makes between moderators and governors proper. -The reader is startled to learn that the oldest and best known of the species,
the centrifugal governor of James Watt, is no governor at all but only a moderator. We had a discussion back in April 2014 about this device under the thread, “What’s wrong with this picture?”.
The second attachment is a series of screenshots of another paper which discusses the role of Maxwell’s paper in cybernetics. Note the distinction between proportional and integral controllers which is talked about on early on.
