Good pop mail alternative to Microsoft Outlook?

[From Fred Nickols (2016.12.13.1415 ET)]

I’m on Windows 10 with Office 365 (Outlook 2016) and I have no problems. Until a few months ago I was on Windows 7 with Outlook 2010 and I had no problems then, either.

What does the error message say?

Subject: Good pop mail alternative to Microsoft Outlook?

[From Bruce Abbott (2016.12.13.1410 EST)]

I’ve been using Microsoft Outlook as my email client for years (after Eudora went defunct) but the latest version has been giving me headaches so I’m looking for a good alternative. (Outlook has been generating an error message when an email includes a large attachment, so I’ve been unable to receive some recent CSGnet posts that have attachments or graphics that are several megabytes in size, and thus far no one has been able to offer a fix that works.) I want an email client that uses pop mail and stores my emails on my local Windows 10 machine rather than something web-based or cloud-based. As we all must use email to post on CSGnet, I thought that some of you who use a PC rather than a Mac might have some experience with other clients and could offer a recommendation.

Any suggestions?

Bruce

Hi Fred,

The message reads: Receiving’ reported error (0x00CCC0F): ‘The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).’

I was told that my antivirus software (AVG Free) might be the problem and switched to Windows Defender. This seemed to do the trick – for about a month. Then the errors started up again. These occur for incoming mail with large (3+ MB attachments). I can download these emails with no problem by going to Frontier’s (actually, Yahoo’s) email website.

Like you I am using Windows 10 and Office 360 (Outlook 2016).

Hi Bruce,

Yep, Thunderbird is great,

You can use pop, but I use imap, which also keeps offline copies

and syncs with the cloud when online; safety against loss of
computer or hard disk corruption.

Btw, did you get the email I sent you on 24th Nov?

I am on a Mac, but I also use Thunderbird, with POP. My wife (still

on OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, as am I) still uses Eudora, but it
doesn’t handle modern HTML very well. If PC Thunderbird works like
Mac Thunderbird, you might like it.

Here’s one other thing you might want to try. Outlook sets a default limit of 20M on attachments and rejects any that are larger. You can go into the registry and reset that size or simply set it to allow any size attachment.
