"Control" comes from "counterroll," a second set of records used in
Merrie Olde England to check the recorder's original set. It seems
appropriate to the idea of comparing a perception to a reference
signal. I also found myself thinking that an appropriate term for
comparing to reference signals at various levels is a matter of
determining "agenda." So how about agenda control? Anyway, as one
who has received a lot of advice as to what I ought to call things
instead of what I do, I'm thinking that in the final analysis
explaining what you do is probably better than depending on the right
