                   "Vision System for Safe Driving"

                               ABSTRACT

Transport and mobility are key elements of a sound economy. For
Daimler-Benz road transport is most important. Vision systems for
cars have the potential to increase safety and efficiency in road
transportation.

A short overview is given of European projects aiming at safe and
efficient driving (PROMETHEUS, Electronic Eye, CLEOPATRA smart
vehicle, PROMOTE). Main research topics, concepts and achieved
results are presented: lane and distance keeping, traffic sign
recognition, obstacle detection. Till now the feasibility has been
proven, but low cost implementation is still far away.

The following open questions will be addressed: Which hardware concept
is the best one? (Silicon Retina versus multi purpose sensor + ASICS
and DSP4s) Which software concept is appropriate? (4D-modelling and
KI-based matching versus learning neural nets)
