Are you sure that the finding pertains to interspike interval? I seem to
recall that Patterson found that people hear pitch when presented with a
sequence of two ACOUSTICAL pulses (of unequal amplitude), not two spikes.
Patterson's findings are not surprising considering the spectral distribution
of energy created by such pulses. I would be very surprised if someone had
found a relation between interspike interval (for only two spikes on a
neuron) and perception of pitch. But maybe things have progressed a pace
since my days as a psychophysicist. Heck, maybe they've even found the
"alertingness" in those alerting stimuli by now; or the information about
disturbances in those perceptual signals;-)
