I've been loosely following the fairness and meaning thread and when Bruce
posted the list of messages above I went back and re-read them more
carefully. I must confess that it's all still beyond me so I'm not about
to comment. However, I did come across Bill Powers' post in which he
pointed out that his father mispronounced "misled" until late in
life. Bruce then responded that he's known others who've done so
too. Well, so did I -- until about 10 years ago -- but in a slightly
different fashion.
Whenever I saw "misled" in print, I would read it or pronounce it to myself
silently as "mizzled" but I knew what it meant and should have recognized
it as "miss-led" (no, I'm not offering an alternate spelling, I'm just
trying to get at the proper sound of the word). However, in conversation,
I would say "miss-led" and make that sound appropriately. I forget what
clued me in to my mistake but I had quite a laugh when it dawned on me.
It's great to know I'm not alone.
