My old friend Kirk Sattley, whom many of you have met at CSG conferences,
died yesterday at Mass General. Four weeks ago I had phoned to arrange to
visit him and his wife Joanne and son Theodore in Wakefield, MA while Mary
and I were finishing her interrupted trip of last Spring. Two weeks ago he
called to say he had cancer and would be starting treatments the following
week, so the visit would have to be curtailed. We had a nice long talk
about all the stuff friends of 50 years talk about, neither of us aware
that it would be our last conversation. I am going to miss knowing he is on
this planet.

My condolences on your loss, Bill. Friends, especially good and old
friends, are too few and far between to take their loss with anything but
the deepest sorrow and regret.
