It strikes me that maybe it would be good to talk about ersatz perceptions,
rather than models, on the basis that
(a) this brings out that they really are perceptions, derived from a variety
of clues relevant to determining where you are in the dark room, or
whatever, including memory of what you've already done.
(b) you only settle for controlling them when you can't control the real thing.
(c) there isn't necessarily some big fancy world of mental models hiding out
in the skull, but perhaps only something a lot more limited, providing
ersatz-substutes for crucially-controlled perceptions.
Wish I had more time to think about this.
