Hi Tim et al

Hi everyone,

Â

I’ve just posted “The Grooviness of Controlâ€? to my Psychology Today blog. You can find it here:

https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/blog/in-control/201806/the-grooviness-control

Â

I hope you’ve got a wonderful, controlling weekend coming up!

Rick: Another super blog post. Thanks. I particularly like this one since, like you, I’ve had a lot difficulty talking friends and family about what I do because I am aware of the negative connotations of the word “control”. Anyway, I’ve got a pointer to your blog post at the “Controlling People” Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ControllingPeople/). I’ll have a lot less internal conflict now about telling people that I study the controlling done by living organisms thanks to your post;-)

Best

Rick

PS: I’m copying this to CSGNet because I think this blog post is relevant to everyone who is interested in PCT.

In what way is calculating the second derivative to find the
stationary point on a curve considered to be control?

Rick: Another super blog post. Thanks. I particularly like this one since, like you, I’ve had a lot difficulty talking friends and family about what I do because I am aware of the negative connotations of the word “control”.

HB : Usually people perceive attempts of “control” of others as something that “constrain” their own control what usually means that disturbances cause “errors”. And probably people don’t feel well if somebody is moving perception far from references. In other words they don’t like “offensive people” who think that they can achieve their goals by attempts of “controlling” other people.

Rick : Anyway, I’ve got a pointer to your blog post at the “Controlling People” Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ControllingPeople/). I’ll have a lot less internal conflict now about telling people that I study the controlling done by living organisms thanks to your post;-)

HB : It seems that you are turning again to “control in organisms” not to “control in environment” done by “control of behavior” as your RCT predicts. Did I finally manage to convince you that PCT definition of control is right ???

Bill P :

CONTROL : Achievement and maintenance of a preselected state in the controlling system, through actions on the environment that also cancel the effects of disturbances.

Let’s see how your RCT defined control :

Rick M. :

CONTROL : Keeping of some »aspect of outer environment« in reference state, protected (defended) from disturbances.
