Scanning the new book display at the library today I saw Slava, Gerovitch's
2002 _From Newspeak to Cyberspeak: A History of Soviet Cybernetics_ MIT Press.
While the primary theme of the book is the Russian experience with cybernetic
ideas and their application, it neccesarily includes a considerable volume of
text devoted to a basic exposition of cybernetics-- and the level of exposition
appears to be quite good. ( an assessment based upon about 10 minutes of spot
checking various topics. ) And, the difficulties which cybernetic ideas
experienced in the context of ideological shifts in the Soviet Union beyond its
being interesting in itself, may be suggestive as to the fate of cybernetics in
the western world. The Russians really do have some very different points of
view about some crucial issues.
