New Browser for PCT Internet Demos

[From Rick Marken (2004.10.07.1410)]

I discovered a browser called Firefox that runs my java demos just the way I
intended them to run when I wrote them. In particular, it runs the
"Hierarchy of Perception and Control" demo, which involves some precise
timing loops, correctly, what has not been the case with the more common
Netscape and Explorer browsers that I've used. That demo did run correctly
in the Safari browser but Safari is only available for Macs. The Foxfire
browser is available for both Mac and PC so now you can run the demo
correctly regardless of what kind of machine you're on. The browser is free
and easy to download and run from:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

I recommend it for those who are interested in looking at (and, hopefully,
further developing) the approach to studying hierarchical control that is
demonstrated in the "Hierarchy of Perception and Control" demo at

http://www.mindreadings.com/ControlDemo/HP.html

Rick,

I have Firefox, but when I went to your website I got a message "n/a" for most of the demos. For the hierarchy I tried to unzip them but there was no exec. file

Hi Dick --

I think what you are trying to do is unnecessary. The demos run in the
browser when you click on the Demo Name in the left hand column of the Demo
Page at Redirect. There is no need to
download and/or unzip files. The browser does all the work.

For example, when you click on "Hierarchy of Perception and Control" in the
left hand column of the Demo Page you should be taken to
http://www.mindreadings.com/ControlDemo/HP.html. When you get to that page
you should see a little coffee cup or something like that while the java
demo loads. Once the demo is loaded you should be able to start it by
pressing one of the buttons that appears. Before doing that you should
probably read the instructions in the "What to Do" section of the page to
see what the demo is about.

Best regards

Rick

Rick,

Thanks for your reply. When I tried to use the two links you give below I got the message, “The page can not be shown.” Tried a couple times with same results. Then I went directly to your web site and could run all the demos directly as you said, except for the spreadsheet. When I clicked on that it first went to the trial-zip message, when I said “I agree” it showed the two files, hierarch (extension-I forget) but when I clicked on them nothing happened.

I’d still like to run the spreadsheet when we can work on it, but maybe this isn’t a good time. I keep checking my email for the latest report from Bill. I wonder if he plans a funeral service and would want any of us there. If he does, I would try to make it.

Best,

Dick
