RM: I agree. I just ordered my copy and look forward to reading it and putting it on my ever expanding shelf of PCT books. I love the title – Principles-Based Counseling and Psychotherapy – especially after reading the description of the book at Amazon. In particular, I like this part: “Alongside this has been the call to focus on evidence-principles rather than evidence-based practices.” What a brilliant (and simple) way to point the “evidence-based” craze in healthcare in the right direction. It helped me “rise above” my own conflict about evidence-based medicine (and healthcare in general).

RM: My conflict was this: I like doing things based on evidence but I also know that the evidence they were talking about was group data, no necessarily applicable to any particular individual. I was able to resolve the conflict, sort of, convincing myself that the evidence based practices were relevant to people in policy positions – people who dealt with groups – who could require that these practices be carried out knowing that they would produce the best results at the group level even though they would not work in many individual cases.

RM: So my conflict was not really gone because I care about what happens to individuals – even the one’s I don;'t like;-) But this problem is solved by realizing that what is evidence-based is the principles – that is, the theories tested by the evidence – and not particular practices which the evidence shows to have “statistically significant” effects at the group level. It’s the principles that matter – the main principle in this case being “behavior is the control of perception”; the practices at the individual level derive from the principles. So in this sense the practices are evidence based too.

RM: Again, kudos to you, Warren and Tim and Sara on what looks to be a great contribution to PCT. My hopes for the future of PCT just took a great leap forward!

Best

Rick
