pasting graphic into email

[From Bruce Nevin (2003.11.03 : EST)]

I'm going to be a bit delayed replying for a while, but I can answer this easily.

Bill Powers (2003.11.03.1535 MST)--

First off, how did you make that diagram appear in your 11:54 post? That's
absolutely terrific, I want to know how to do it.

I opened the graphics file in a graphics editor (see below). Or maybe I selected the image in the Word document, copied it, and pasted it in the Graphics editor. Doesn't matter, either would work.

In the graphics editor, I selected the portion that I wanted and copied it.

In Eudora, I placed my cursor where I wanted the graphic to appear and pasted it.

I used PaintShop Pro, an inexpensive graphics editor from Jasc software. You could do this in PhotoShop for a lot more money. Any graphics editor would probably do, there's probably some shareware out there.

Alas, when I sent that smiley post to myself, all I saw was a cryptic
reference to a .jpg file. No graphic popped up in the message, although the
graphic did appear in your message (the sonograms) and in the post I sent.

Bill, what kind of email client software are you using? It might have an option to enable/disable HTML content. That's only one possible source "disturbance" for this "error", but a good place to start.

Then again, I tend to prefer more elemental expressions..

Jim Beardsley and Bruce Nevin:

The problem was, as Jim suggested, in the handling of HTML files. I changed
the option from "send unstyled text" to "send styled and unstyled text" and
got the graphic back when I sent it to myself. Don't know what else I've
done to myself with this change, but we shall see.

Best and thanks,

Sending to the list, as it may be of general interest.

Jim Beardsley and Bruce Nevin:

The problem was, as Jim suggested, in the handling of HTML files.

More exactly, the handling of HTML tags embedded in email.

I changed

the option from “send unstyled text” to “send styled and
unstyled text” and

got the graphic back when I sent it to myself. Don’t know what else
I’ve

done to myself with this change, but we shall see.

It gives you HTML tagging ability under the covers. Not only can you
include pictures, you can
change the
font
and do other things. The option you selected has no
effect on your incoming mail, but it is clear that you have enabled HTML
for that, since you see the pictures.
In Eudora:
Click Help.
Click Topics.
Type style.** Double-click the selected item in the list, “Styled Text
Options Window
” (or click the Display button below the
list).

The help topic indicates how to control how HTML is used in what you send
and in what you receive. An explanatory excerpt:

"The styles are delivered to your recipients
using the HyperText Marking Language (HTML) format. However, the styles
your recipient sees depends on how well their email software supports
this standard.

“HTML is the text formatting standard used in the World Wide Web by
Web browsers and newer email applications. HTML allows you to use
enriched text, which includes different fonts, color, sizes, bold, and so
forth. Also, HTML lets you embed pictures and create bullet lists in the
emails you send.”

Looking at the online help for Eudora (imagine doing that!), I see
that >there’s a menu option
Edit >
Insert > Picture
I’m using the free version of Eudora (no ads), and while that Edit
option exists, no browse window opens.

I have found that the picture is actually stored in a subfolder called
“Embedded”, in the data folder for Eudora. If you delete the
files in that folder after receiving a message with a picture in it, the
picture doesn’t appear when you reopen the post.

Just cutting and pasting from any program that displays graphics seems to
work for me. A new .jpg file is created in the Embedded folder. By the
way, that folder can get pretty stuffed if it’s not cleaned out, I should
think. Mine only had about 3 MB in it, but if we send a lot of graphics
it could be much more.

Bill P.

What?!!@! Read the Help files? What kind of radical preversion is this?

It works! I can't believe it's so simple! I hope everyone who gets this
post sees a smiley face, drawn by an artist indigenous to the American
Southwest.

there’s a menu option

Thanks, Bruce. It looks like I remembered it correctly. The
formant changes that correspond to “d” are all over the map; same for “g”.
Regular perception; irregular environment. So it apples to speech as well
as to color.

Guess that wraps it up;-)
