Basic Facts of Social Behavior

Since actions aren't directly controlled, you can't tell which perceptions
people are controlling just by looking at their actions.

To figure out the perception a person is controlling, you need to perform
the Test:

        Guess the variable under control.

        Apply disturbances that would change the variable if it weren't
under control.

        See if the person acts to resist the changes. If the person's
actions consistently oppose the disturbance, you have found the controlled
variable. If not, guess again.

Two (or more) people must have similar reference standards in order to
control a perception cooperatively.

If two (or more) people have different reference standards and try to
control the same thing, conflict will occur.

Conflict and effective control can occur simultaneously. Many social
encounters are a mixture of cooperation and conflict, with outcomes
different from what any participant actually wants.

When large numbers of people collectively control a perception, the
participants often feel deprived of individual control and like some unseen
force or some great leader is in control of the outcome.

If a conflict drives opponents to the limits of their resources, the
disputed variable will no longer be controlled.

Conflicts tend to escalate rapidly and relax much more slowly.

Conflicts can occur within individuals, between individuals, or between
groups. Whatever the level, the same principles apply.

To solve a conflict, opponents need to focus joint attention on a
higher-level perception in which they can cooperate.

Trying to control someone else's behavior almost always leads to conflict.

A basic rule of ethics is to treat other people as self-guided control
systems.

You state this as a "fact". I'm curious about your evidence but would even
settle for an empirical illustration. Taken at face value it does not
square with my own experience nor with any of the reports I have recorded
of people engaging with large numbers of others in collective actions.

Your comments on the TEST. I presume that there is some level of "basics"
that you are "shooting for" so my comment might be suggesting excessive
complexity even if I do think that it is important...

you say:

It is quite possible that you will never be "certain" that you have
"found the controlled variable" (or maybe it might be better to say
rather that you _should_ never be too certain...).

The more complex the situation the more likely that you might be
disturbing a related CEV as opposed to the actual controlled CEV.
Where the relationship is close and consistent, ever discovering the
difference might prove diffcult (of course it also might not make any
"practical" difference either).

The very real limitations imposed upon us with respect to applying the
TEST (the FULL TEST) permit ambiguity. It is possibly also important to
mention the other aspects of the test.

If two (or more) people have different reference standards and try to
control the same thing, conflict will occur.

I would suggest that it is probable that two (or more) people ALWAYS have
different reference standards for any given CEV.

At issue is whether their different reference standards are in conflict
or not. For example, if person A wants "at least X of Y" and person B
wants "at least X+Z of Y" there is no conflict if B determines the
amount (and this is the only issue).

In a "bi-directional" control situation, if A wants X +/-W and B accepts
anything within X +/-W+Z then again there is not a conflict IF A's goal
is met. However if the control is only "just within B's limits" then A
and B can be "in conflict" (B is satisfied, A is not).

Of course I'm "doing a bit of inventing here" but in B's view A is an
annoying "perfectionist" and in A's view B is "sloppy and careless".

Did you perchance leave out "... and feel like some ...

This is correct but could be a bit misleading (implying that control
system conflict is "typically balanced). This is, of course, the case
WHEN the control system output capabilities are sufficiently similar.
A vastly superiour control system OTOH might not even be aware that
there _is_ any conflict (ie control is "excellent" and expenditure of
resources is not "excessive") yet the opposing control systems might
be "coming apart".

I think that possibly there is an important unstated assumption here (at
least it is an inference that I assumed)...

I assumed that "the participants often feel deprived of" implied that
their own individual perception of the "group" CEV was NOT aligned to
within acceptable limits of their own individual references. Now I admit
that my own thinking that follows this is just that and not based upon
any research:

If the "group" CEV is perceived "to have changed as a result of some
group action(s)" then it is not unreasonable to presume that control
systems having such a perception would also perceive that the CEV is
"controlled". I don't mean here that such a perception would necessarily
be factually correct, only that some control systems would believe that
the CEV is controlled if they had some (even loose) evidence that the CEV
might have changed as a result of "group" action. [To me, this is where
that famous guy "THEY" comes from that is always doing everything wrong]

Kent's "group" suggests that there is an implicit "we are doing this
together" and "will come to an agreement about what needs to be done".
These not only involved "Systems Concepts" and "Principles" but become
references for perception of the operation of the group.

It seems reasonable to me that if a perception exists that the CEV(s)
that the group is/are supposed to be controlling are not being perceived
at the desired reference level of the individual and yet that individual
perceives that the CEV(s) is/are _being_ controlled then such an
individual might presume that something else is controlling.

If the group is large enough and sufficiently fragmented and/or the
language used in "group" discussions sufficiently ambigious that all or
most of the other individuals that our subject speaks with seem to be in
agreement with the subject then again it does not seem to me to be
unreasonable to expect the subject to "feel" that "someone is controlling
the group" or "someone is overwhelming to groups power".

Having said all of this however, I have to agree that it is probably very
important to point out that Kent's statement probably only applies where
there are individuals that are not satisfied with "group" performance and
do not perceive any particular indentifiable "cause" for the problem.

After Clark's post, Bill sent a message offering an interpretation of what
I was trying to say, and he pretty much summed up my position, but I can
give a little more background on the way I've been thinking about this
issue.

For a long time sociologists and lots of other folks in looking at
wide-spread social phenomena have claimed to see something they call a
"group actor" or "collective mind" or "collective conscience" or "crowd" at
work, something which is much stronger than any of the individuals involved
and which effectively controls the social outcome. The list of
distinguished sociologists who have talked about group actors or something
similar is a long one--everyone from "founding fathers" like Emile Durkheim
to non-nonsense, rational-choice theorists of the current era, like James
S. Coleman. And nonsociologists, like my intro soc students, regularly
talk about "society" or "the middle class" as if these abstract entities
were some kind of super-person in control of social situations, or else
they tend to attribute to the President or other leaders a similar kind of
super-human power to control events.

In his excellent book, _The Myth of the Madding Crowd_, Clark argues that
theories of a "crowd mind" or the like must be completely mistaken, and I
agree fully with Clark on that point. However, I've also wondered why so
many people fantasize the existence of these super-human social entities,
and I now think I have a clue.

I'm in the middle of writing a paper that makes the following argument:

1. In situations where two or more people collectively control a
perception, they are likely to have different reference standards for their
control of the perception. This will lead to conflict.

2. As long as the conflict doesn't get out of hand, the CEV associated
with their joint perception will continue to be controlled in spite of the
conflict. I've called this result, "conflictive cooperation."

3. The CEV will be controlled at a "virtual reference level" emerging
from the joint efforts of the participating people.

4. If very large numbers of people are engaged in collective control of a
perception, the emerging virtual reference level will be different from the
individual's reference level for almost every person.

5. If very large numbers of people are involved in the collective control,
any single individual's efforts to make the collective CEV match his or her
own standard will have a negligible result on the outcome. People will
tend to feel individually powerless, especially if their own reference
standard is far away from the emerging virtual reference level.

6. If very large numbers of people are involved in the collective control,
the CEV will be highly stable, and impact of the collective control effort
on the CEV will be indistinguishable from that which might be produced by
some mythical super-powerful control system using the virtual reference
level to control its perceptions.

7. My conclusion is that people, sociologists included, in looking at
highly stable wide-spread social phenomena (like basic cultural norms or
the conventions of language) lose sight of all the individual humans whose
efforts are jointly responsible for that stability, and instead succumb to
the illusion that some super-human "virtual social controller" actually
exists. Hence, the illusion of the social actor or the all-powerful
leader.

Does this now make better sense, Clark, or do you think I'm going way off track?

I think that your analysis and conclusions are wonderful. For what it's
worth, I would call that great "PCT style thinking"!
